Driving in Curitiba: Br 476 Veiculos De Carga

Curitiba, Brazil · Heavy vehicle ban

Official name Restrição ao tráfego de veículos de carga na BR 476 (Linha Verde), Km 120,9 a Km 142,8 — Portaria SMDT nº 11, de 18 de fevereiro de 2022

Not in force in Curitiba right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 06:05 · America/Sao Paulo

  • Not in force Goods vehicles with a Peso Bruto Total over 10 tonnes on the BR 476 between Km 120,9 and Km 142,8 — cars, vans, motorcycles, coaches and lighter goods vehicles are never in this scheme

Starts Tuesday, 13 October 2026 at 07:00 local time.

Portaria SMDT nº 11/2022 restricts "em dias úteis" and never uses the word feriado — 0 matches in 5,199 characters — so whether a Brazilian public holiday is inside or outside this scheme is not stated by the publisher, and we hold no dated Brazilian holiday calendar either. The rules above treat every public holiday as a working day, which over-warns on a holiday rather than under-warning on a working day.

This is a stretch of one road, not an area, and we hold no geometry for it. The portaria bounds it by kilometre post — Km 120,9 to Km 142,8 of the BR 476 — and converting kilometre posts to coordinates would be a guess, so a route check warns for the whole city instead. The stretch is signed on the ground under article 3.

Public holidays are not encoded and are not settled. The portaria restricts on "dias úteis" and never says whether a feriado is one; these rules therefore treat a public holiday as an ordinary weekday, which over-warns rather than under-warns.

The exemptions in article 2 are not encoded. They apply only to vehicles attending an occurrence on the stretch, and to maintenance vehicles authorised in advance by SMDT, so a vehicle that is exempt will see these rules show the stretch as closed to it.

Curitiba's central-area lorry rule is a second scheme over different ground on a different clock. A goods vehicle can be outside this one and inside that one, or the other way round; read both records rather than either alone.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Curitiba closes its main north–south expressway to heavy lorries at the two weekday peaks. The BR 476 crosses the city as the Linha Verde, and between kilometre 120.9 and kilometre 142.8 no goods vehicle with a Peso Bruto Total over 10 tonnes may use it on a working day between 07:00 and 09:00 or between 17:00 and 19:00.

That is the whole rule: no charge, no permit to buy, no registration, and nothing at all outside those four hours. The measure is gross combined weight rather than payload, so a goods vehicle at or under 10 tonnes PBT is never caught, and neither is a car, a van, a motorcycle or a coach.

The exemptions are narrow and are for vehicles attending an incident on the stretch: official vehicles, public-service vehicles, fire, rescue, police, traffic enforcement and ambulances, public-utility vehicles under CONTRAN Resolution 268/2008, and breakdown recovery.

This is a municipal portaria on a federal road, which is unusual and is the reason it exists: the federal highway police delegated traffic authority over this stretch to the city, and the city then legislated for it. It is a separate scheme from the lorry ban in Curitiba's central area, which runs on different hours over a different area and a different threshold; a driver crossing the city can meet both.

Daily charge

There is no charge of any kind, and this is the "no such thing" sort of empty rather than the "not stated" sort. Portaria SMDT nº 11/2022 prohibits and exempts; it contains no toll, no day pass, no payable exemption and no fee, and the only authorisation it provides for is free by construction — article 2, §4 has SMDT issue one to vehicles carrying out maintenance work on the stretch at the city's own request.

The word "multa" does not appear anywhere in its 5,199 characters, and neither does any amount in reais.

When it operates

Working days only, and only at the two peaks: 07:00 to 09:00 and 17:00 to 19:00. Article 1 states it once and completely — the traffic of goods vehicles with a Peso Bruto Total greater than 10 tonnes is prohibited on the BR 476 between Km 120.9 and Km 142.8 "em dias úteis, nos horários das 07h00min às 09h00min e das 17h00min às 19h00min".

Outside those four hours the stretch is open to them; so is the whole of Saturday and Sunday. The portaria says nothing at all about public holidays: "feriado" appears nowhere in it. Brazilian usage takes "dias úteis" to exclude public holidays, and the city's own lorry decree for the central area spells that reading out in its article 10 — but this portaria does not, and we will not put words into it.

Treat a public holiday as restricted unless a sign on the road says otherwise. The stated purpose in the recitals is why the hours are what they are: to give passenger traffic, public transport and pedestrians more fluidity and safety "nos horários de maior fluxo".

Area covered

One road, and a named stretch of it: the federal highway BR 476 between kilometre 120.9 and kilometre 142.8. That is not an area and would be misrepresented by a polygon — it is 21.9 km of expressway running north–south through the built-up city, the road the portaria's own recitals call "a BR 476 – Linha Verde" and its recital on the works calls the Linha Verde Norte.

The same two kilometre posts bound the stretch over which the federal highway police delegated traffic-policing powers to the municipality, under the Acordo de Cooperação Técnica nº 1/2021 recited in the portaria and, before it, the Convênio de Delegação nº 003/2004 with the DNIT; outside them Curitiba has no power to make this rule and does not purport to.

We take those kilometre posts from the portaria itself and from SMDT's own index entry, not from the delegation agreement: SMDT publishes the 2021 Acordo as a six-page PDF with no text layer in it at all, 1.28 MB that yields zero characters, so we cannot quote it and do not pretend to. The southern post has moved once.

The revoked Portaria SETRAN nº 71/2016 set the same rule from Km 120,7; the 2022 portaria starts it 200 m further on at Km 120,9, matching the delegated stretch. The portaria gives no coordinates and no boundary, only the posts, and we have not converted them: kilometre posts are placed and renumbered by the road authority, and a conversion of ours would be a guess dressed as a location.

For scale rather than for delimitation, the ways carrying a BR-476 reference inside the Curitiba municipal bounding box reach at most 20.36 km from the city anchor in OpenStreetMap. Article 3 puts the signing obligation on the city: "O Município de Curitiba implantará e manterá a devida sinalização vertical conforme restrição acima imposta", so the stretch is marked on the ground.

Why there is no map here
This scheme is a stretch of carriageway, not an enclosed area, so a polygon would misrepresent how it works — the same reason Stockholm's toll points carry no shape. The portaria bounds it as the BR 476 from Km 120,9 to Km 142,8, and there is nothing to be inside or outside of: a driver either uses that stretch in the restricted hours or does not. We have not converted the kilometre posts to coordinates, because kilometre posts are placed and renumbered by the road authority and our conversion would be a guess presented as a location. GeoCuritiba, the city's own ArcGIS server, publishes 479 layers across the 88 public Map and Feature services we can enumerate without a token, and none of them is this restriction.
Petrol standard

There is no emission standard to meet, and no car is in this scheme at any hour. The rule sorts vehicles by one number only — Peso Bruto Total over 10 tonnes — and Portaria SMDT nº 11/2022 names no Euro class, no PROCONVE phase, no registration year and no fuel anywhere in its text.

Diesel standard

Not applicable, for the same reason as the petrol standard. What matters here is unusually clear for a Brazilian municipal instrument: the threshold is stated as "Peso Bruto Total (PBT) maior que 10 toneladas", which is the loaded weight of the vehicle rather than its rated payload, so a driver can read it off the vehicle's own documents without interpretation.

That is the opposite of the central-area decree in the same city, whose 7-tonne figure carries no qualifier at all.

Penalty if you do not comply

Assume a breach is an infraction and that we cannot tell you its size: the publisher does not state it. Portaria SMDT nº 11/2022 is silent on consequences — "multa" and "penalidade" match nothing in its 74 lines and 5,199 characters, and the single occurrence of "infra" is inside "Departamento de Infraestrutura de Transportes" in a recital.

The portaria does cite the federal Código de Trânsito Brasileiro three times, but always for something else: article 24 for the municipality's competence, and article 29, incisos VII and VIII, and article 120 for who is exempt. It never cites an infraction article, and following D-053 we will not choose a fine class out of the national table on the publisher's behalf.

Enforcement itself is not in doubt: the whole basis of the portaria is that the federal highway police delegated the power to police this stretch to Curitiba, which the city records in the recitals as the Acordo de Cooperação Técnica nº 1/2021 and the Convênio de Delegação nº 003/2004, and the city publishes its own traffic-fine revenue.

How to comply
  • Check one number: your Peso Bruto Total. At or under 10 tonnes you are never in this scheme, whatever you are carrying. Cars, vans, motorcycles and coaches are outside it entirely.
  • If you are over 10 tonnes PBT, keep off the BR 476 between Km 120.9 and Km 142.8 on a working day from 07:00 to 09:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00. That is the Linha Verde through Curitiba.
  • Outside those four hours the stretch is open to you, and it is open all day on Saturday and Sunday. There is nothing to pay, nothing to register and no permit to obtain.
  • Do not count on a public holiday being free. The portaria restricts on "dias úteis" and never mentions feriados; the reading that excludes holidays is a normal one but it is not written here, so plan around the restriction unless the signs say otherwise.
  • Watch for the signs rather than for a map. Article 3 makes the city responsible for putting up and maintaining vertical signage for this restriction, and there is no published boundary to check against.
  • The exemptions are for attending an incident on the stretch, not for ordinary work. They cover official vehicles, public-service vehicles, emergency, police, traffic-enforcement and ambulance vehicles, public-utility vehicles under CONTRAN Resolution 268/2008 — utility network repair, road maintenance and signing, roadside recovery, cash in transit, escort vehicles and refuse collection — and mechanical rescue. Public-service vehicles must carry a non-removable amber flashing or rotating light, and an official vehicle must carry the body's name, initials or logo painted on its doors.
  • If you are doing maintenance work on the stretch at the city's request, get the written authorisation first: article 2, §4 requires SMDT's competent department to issue one.
  • Read Curitiba's other lorry record too. The central-area decree bars vehicles over 7.0 tonnes or 7.0 m from the Zona Central de Tráfego from 09:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 13:30 on Saturday — different threshold, different hours, different place. You can be clear of one and inside the other.
