What this site asks of you: nothing

There is no account, no registration and no sign-in. Nothing on this site asks for your name, your address or your vehicle. Most of what reaches us is technical rather than personal, and does not identify anybody by itself.

What arrives automatically

Like any web server, ours records the requests it answers. That log can contain your IP address, the browser and operating system you use, the page you asked for, where you came from, and the date and time.

It is kept to run the site, to find faults, to notice abuse, and to understand in aggregate which pages are used. It is not used to work out who you are.

Cookies and similar storage

In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, non-essential analytics and advertising storage stay disabled until the visitor consents. Cookies that are strictly needed to serve the site and keep it secure may be set without asking, because without them the site cannot do its job. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland everything else waits for you; elsewhere your browser settings can block it at any time.

You can change your mind at any time through the Privacy and cookie settings control in the footer, and your browser can block or delete cookies regardless of what we do. The cookie policy sets out the categories in detail.

Analytics

When you have consented to it, this site uses Google Analytics, a service operated by Google LLC, to understand how the site is used in aggregate — which pages are read, roughly where visitors are, and what browsers and devices they use. The data that produces is transmitted to and processed by Google LLC under its own terms. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland it does not run until you consent. Elsewhere it runs by default, and your browser settings can block it.

Advertising

Some pages carry advertising served by Google AdSense. Where consent is required, a Google-certified consent management platform records your choice and communicates it before any advertisement is requested — a page does not become an advertising page merely by having a space on it.

Advertising cookies may be used to select what you are shown, including on the basis of your earlier visits to other sites. You can refuse them here, change them later through the same footer control, and manage personalised advertising in your Google account settings. What we do and do not allow advertising to do is set out separately.

Infrastructure and other processors

Cloudflare sits in front of this site for security, delivery and performance. To do that it processes technical data such as IP addresses, request headers and traffic patterns, and it may set a security cookie to tell ordinary visitors from automated abuse.

Behind that, running the site involves service providers of these kinds:

They process the limited technical information their service needs. We do not sell personal data, and we do not hand it to anyone for their own marketing.

The one thing you type

The route check is the only place this site takes input. When you submit it, the two place names you typed are sent to a routing service so it can find them and plan a route between them. We use these, in this order: the public OSRM demo server, Geoapify. Only the first that answers receives what you typed; a later one sees it only if the one before it failed. Nothing else about you is attached, and we do not add an identifier.

We cache the answer for a while, so asking the same question twice does not spend a second request on it.

How long anything is kept

Technical and analytics data is kept for as long as it takes to run the site, understand its performance and keep it secure. Different providers keep their own records for their own periods, set by what they need operationally and by their legal obligations.

Visitors from outside the United Kingdom

The site is reachable everywhere and read in many countries. Using it means technical data may be processed on infrastructure in more than one jurisdiction.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR and EU GDPR you may have the right to ask for access to your personal data, to have it corrected or deleted, to have its processing restricted, and to object to some kinds of processing.

One honest limit: because this site has no accounts and collects so little, there is often nothing here that identifies you, and in those cases we cannot connect a request to a person — which is a consequence of collecting little, not a way of avoiding the question.

Asking us something

Write to contact at drivingdirections dot org — written out rather than linked, so that address harvesters have to work for it. Requests are handled under the law that applies to them.

Changes

This policy will be updated when the law, the technology or the way the site runs changes. The current version always lives at this address.
