Driving in Aarhus: Miljøzone

Aarhus, Denmark · Low emission zone

In force in Aarhus right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 11:02 · Europe/Copenhagen

The zone is always on; whether it reaches you depends on the engine and its emission class, which this timetable does not check. A petrol, hybrid or electric vehicle is unaffected at every hour, and so is a diesel that meets the standard.

Nothing here is a charge. A vehicle that does not meet the standard is not allowed in at any price — there is no day pass to buy.

The zone edge decides whether any of this applies, and we hold no polygon for it, so this warning is city-wide.

The two designated transit routes the authority names, which a non-compliant vehicle may still use, are in Copenhagen and Aalborg. It names none here.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Aarhus runs one of Denmark's five miljøzoner, and the scheme restricts diesel only. A diesel car or minibus needs a particulate filter or at least Euro 5; a diesel van up to 3.5 tonnes the same; a diesel lorry or bus over 3.5 tonnes needs a filter or at least Euro VI. Petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles may enter whatever their age.

There is no charge and no day pass — a vehicle either meets the requirement or may not lawfully be used in the zone. Miljøstyrelsen, the Danish environmental agency, issues the fines: 12,500 kr. for a lorry or bus, 1,500 kr. for a van, car or minibus.

The requirements are national and word-for-word the same in all five cities; what differs between them is where the zone edge runs.

Daily charge

There is no charge and no day pass. Nothing in the scheme is priced: a vehicle either meets the particulate-filter or Euro-class requirement and is used freely, or it may not lawfully be used in the zone at all. The only money in it is the fine, which is recorded under penalty.

When it operates

Always, and that is a statement about the instruments rather than a timetable anyone published. Miljøbeskyttelsesloven § 15 b sets the requirement out three times — once for lorries and buses, once for vans, once for diesel cars — and each time as something that "gælder i en miljøzone" from a given date onwards, with no hour, no weekday and no season attached. The bekendtgørelse that implements it does the same.

Both were searched on 14 September 2026 for the clock words they use at all, and the only time windows in either belong to the exemptions and the paperwork rather than to the zone: a registered night-work exemption runs from 20:00 to 10:00, and an access registered on the day of travel lasts until midnight. So there is no hour at which a non-compliant diesel may lawfully be used here.

Area covered

The national service names Aarhus as one of the five municipalities with a miljøzone, but it describes the edge only as a map rather than in words, which is why this record warns at city level. What it does say in words applies here: no motorway lies inside any Danish miljøzone, though the authority warns that some exits can border one.

The two transit routes it names, which a non-compliant vehicle may still use, are in Copenhagen and Aalborg — there is none here.

Why there is no map here
The authority does publish the outline, and we can reach it: the map on its own site is an ArcGIS Experience Builder application over a public feature layer, Hosted/Miljoezoner, which answers queries and offers GeoJSON export. What it does not carry is any statement of terms. The layer's copyrightText is an empty string and the portal item's licenseInfo is null, so there is no licence, no attribution requirement and no permission to redistribute for us to comply with — and geometry we cannot say we are allowed to republish does not go into the corpus. The extent was read, because sizing our own city-level warning is a different act from republishing the shape: the Aarhus polygon spans 56.14040–56.17815 N and 10.18272–10.23335 E, whose furthest corner is 3.70 km from the city anchor. That matters more here than elsewhere, because Aarhus Kommune reaches 25.93 km from the same anchor — past the corpus's 20 km default. Had the municipality been treated as the zone, this record would have carried a radius override of 26 km and over-warned across most of East Jutland; the zone itself sits well inside the default, so no override is set.

Petrol standard

No restriction. The Danish miljøzone reaches compression-ignition engines only: every vehicle class the bekendtgørelse defines — lorry, bus, van, car — is defined as one "drevet af en motor med kompressionstænding", which is a diesel. The national service says the same thing from the driver's end: a vehicle running on petrol, or a hybrid, does not even have to be registered, whatever its age.

Diesel standard

Two standards, split by weight. A diesel car, minibus or van needs a particulate filter, and the regulation treats Euro 5 or better as meeting that requirement on its own. A diesel lorry or bus over 3.5 tonnes needs a particulate filter, and Euro VI or better is treated as meeting it.

A retrofitted filter counts, but for a heavy vehicle it must be an "effektivt partikelfilter" of an approved type, certified by the fitter and given an identification number by Miljøstyrelsen before the vehicle is tested.

Miljøstyrelsen (Danish Environmental Protection Agency) — miljoezoner.dk. The amount recorded here is the one for a car, van or minibus; the same page states a second, much larger tier, and both are the publisher's own figures: "12.500 kr. for lastbiler og busser" and "1.500 kr. for vare- og personbiler og minibusser". The fine is an administrative bødeforlæg issued by the agency itself rather than by the police, and a foreign driver who afterwards sends documentation that the vehicle did meet the requirements can have it written down to 1,000 kr., within 80 days of issue

How to comply
  • If the vehicle runs on petrol, is a hybrid or is electric, there is nothing to do and nothing to register.
  • If it is a diesel, check it against the standard above: filter or Euro 5 for a car, minibus or van, filter or Euro VI for a lorry or bus over 3.5 tonnes.
  • A foreign-registered diesel has to be registered on miljoezoner.dk before it is used in a zone if it was first registered before a cut-off date the agency publishes as a table — 1 January 2011 for a car or minibus, 1 September 2016 for a van, 1 January 2015 for a lorry or bus. Registration must be done no later than the day of travel; you may drive as soon as it is submitted, without waiting for approval, and it is valid for five years.
  • Registering needs a copy of the registration certificate, plus either evidence of the Euro class or a declaration from a competent body that the vehicle has a factory or retrofitted particulate filter. That declaration may be at most 18 months old and must be in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish or English.
  • Vehicles registered in Denmark for veteran use, and foreign-registered vehicles more than 30 years old, are outside the requirements altogether.
  • One registration answers for the country. The requirements are national, so a vehicle cleared for one Danish miljøzone is cleared for all five — but the agency's own fine pages, listed below, state that a bødeforlæg is issued for each week of non-compliant use and separately for each miljøzone the vehicle was used in, so a non-compliant vehicle driven through several of them collects several.
  • Having applied for a dispensation is not enough. The agency's fine pages state that a vehicle may not be used in a zone until the dispensation has actually been granted.
