Norway: 1 scheme to know about before you drive in.
Bergen has one driving restriction on our books: the Piggdekkavgift, Bergen kommune (studded tyre charge). The published charge is 35.00 NOK per day. What is a studded tyre charge?
Sources last read on 2026-09-25, from the authorities' own pages. The next scheduled check is 2026-12-23.
35.00 NOK per day.
Bergen charges for what your car is shod with, not for what is under its bonnet, and it charges it across the whole municipality.
If you drive on studded tyres in or through Bergen between 1 November 2026 and 4 April 2027, you owe the piggdekkavgift for each day you use the car — the City's own opening sentence ties the charge to 'de dagene du bruker bilen', the days you use the car, so a visitor who parks for three days and drives on the fourth pays for one.
Nothing about the vehicle itself changes the answer: there is no Euro class, no fuel rule, no age limit and no exemption for an electric car anywhere on the City's page, and weight only sets the tariff. A day costs 35 kroner up to 3,500 kg and 70 above it, a month 450 and 900, the season 1,400 and 2,800, and driving without a valid one risks a tilleggsgebyr of 750 kroner.
Three things separate Bergen from Oslo and a driver who assumes the schemes are identical will get two of them wrong. ⚠️ Bergen does not refund: the City says twice on one page that paid piggdekkavgift is not refunded, where Oslo cancels a season oblat and refunds the remainder — so buying the season here is a decision you cannot unwind. ⚠️ And Bergen's month is 31 days from the purchase date rather than a calendar month, which means the day you buy it is the day it starts, not the first of the month.
What does travel is the permit itself: Bergen states that it runs the same scheme as Oslo and Trondheim and that a valid permit from either of those cities is valid here too, so a driver who has already paid in one of the three owes nothing further in this one.
The exemptions are a closed list of six classes — a car carrying a disabled parking permit, a vehicle on ploughing, salting or gritting duty, police and diplomatic vehicles, emergency vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds and moped cars, and trailers and tractors. A foreign registration is not among them.
One last thing the City says that a winter visitor should hear: outside the season you may use studded tyres without paying anything, if driving conditions require them.
