Slovakia: 1 scheme to know about before you drive in.
Bratislava has one driving restriction on our books: the Miestna daň za vjazd a zotrvanie motorového vozidla v historickej časti… (limited traffic zone). What is a limited traffic zone?

Slovakia enters this corpus on a tax, and on a correction. The framework is the same one Czechia's thirteen spa-town records run on in a different national wrapper: §§ 60 to 66 of Act 582/2004 on local taxes let a Slovak municipality tax the entry and the staying of a motor vehicle in a historic part of a town, and leave the municipality to define that area itself.
Bratislava-Staré Mesto — the borough that owns the old town, not the Capital City — has done exactly that, most recently by VZN č. 4/2025 of 16 December 2025, in force since 1 January 2026. The taxed area is a list of streets rather than a shape, and the ordinance names every one of them, from Michalská and Ventúrska through Hlavné námestie to Zámocké schody.
Liability begins on the day the vehicle enters and ends on the day it leaves, and the tax period is 'every day begun, or a calendar year'. There is no emission test and no weight threshold that decides the case on its own: the ordinance asks who you are and why you are going in. What it does not have is a price anyone can simply pay.
Every one of the forty-odd rates is conditioned on a status — 10 euros a year for a resident or property owner of the historic part, 2 euros a day for that person's visitor if they can prove a garage or courtyard off the public street, 1 euro a day for a tenant or someone with a workplace there and off-street parking, 5 euros a day for a delivery or a tradesman coming to a resident and then only four times ninety minutes between 06:00 and 22:00, 15 euros a day for the same errand on behalf of a company, 365 euros a year for a company with a legal relationship to a building inside, 30 euros for a single wedding-party entry and 10 for a christening, 30 or 60 euros a day for film production and building work depending on whether the vehicle is over 3,500 kg, 0.10 euro a day where a disabled person's parking card applies.
A tourist with a hire car and no address inside the streets is in none of those categories, which is the point: the historic part is a pedestrian zone behind a no-entry sign, and the Capital City's own transport-permits page confirms that getting past it needs its permission, expressly including vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
The tax is what you pay once you have a reason to be admitted, and the application goes to the borough's local-tax office on a form that asks for the vehicle's maximum mass, where you will stop and where you will park.
Exemptions are listed rather than implied: the borough and the Capital City themselves, their contractors and their subcontractors, budgetary and 100-percent-owned bodies, diplomatic missions resident inside, the first five deliveries to a resident, the first two emergency call-outs for gas, electricity, water or a lift, and the crews fixing a burst main. The correction matters as much as the record.
Cycle 73 measured the Capital City's own list of the taxes it levies, found seven pages and no entry tax, and wrote down that Bratislava does not levy one. That was a true statement about the wrong authority: in a two-tier city the borough taxes its own territory, and the borough's register had the ordinance in it all along.
