Sheffield, United Kingdom · Low emission zone
In force in Sheffield right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 10:04 · Europe/London
The zone runs continuously; whether you pay depends on what you drive, which this does not check. A private car and a motorbike are outside the charge at every hour.
The charging order's own duration clause says the scheme "will remain in force indefinitely", so there is no end date to watch for — only variation orders.
Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.
Sheffield's Clean Air Zone began charging at midnight on 27 February 2023. It is a Class C zone inside and including the inner ring road and city centre, and private cars and motorbikes are not charged. A non-compliant bus, coach or HGV pays £50 a day; a non-compliant taxi, private hire vehicle, van or light goods vehicle pays £10.
Campervans and motorhomes are charged, though a larger one can apply for the reduced £10 rate, and a taxi or private hire vehicle pays even when the journey is private rather than for work.
There is no charge for a private car or a motorbike in Sheffield. The council states it plainly — "Private passenger cars and motorbikes will not be charged" — and goes further than most: it says a private car will not need to re-route to avoid the zone, because there is nothing there to avoid.
The vehicles that do pay are non-compliant buses, coaches and HGVs at £50 a day, and non-compliant taxis, private hire vehicles, vans, light goods vehicles, campervans, motorhomes and some SUVs and four-by-fours at £10. A taxi or private hire vehicle is charged whether it is working or not.
The charging day is the twenty-four hours from midnight to midnight, and the zone operates every day of the year. One charge covers that whole day however many times you enter; crossing midnight inside the zone is two charging days.
The zone is Sheffield's inner ring road and the city centre inside it. The charging order designates "all local roads within the Clean Air Zone", so it is the whole street network within the boundary rather than a set of named routes, and the charge applies whether you drive into it, out of it or only within it.
We hold the council's own published boundary, so the map on this page is the authority's shape and not an approximation.
Euro 4 petrol or newer is compliant. The charging order puts it as a positive-ignition vehicle meeting the Euro 4/IV standards in Annex 3, and an electric vehicle is compliant outright. Following the winter 2021 consultation the taxi standard was brought down to Euro 4 petrol so that it matches every other class in the scheme.
Euro 6 diesel or newer is compliant — Euro VI for buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles. An older diesel van, taxi, private hire vehicle or minibus pays £10 a day and an older diesel bus, coach or lorry pays £50; an older diesel car pays nothing.
Next scheduled re-check: 2026-12-10.
