Driving in Nancy: Low emission zone

Nancy, France · Low emission zone

Official name Zone à Faibles Émissions mobilité (ZFE-m) de la Métropole du Grand Nancy

In force in Nancy right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 11:02 · Europe/Paris

The zone is always on, but today it reaches almost nobody driving a car: only light commercial vehicles, lorries, buses and coaches at Crit'Air 5 or unclassified are restricted, and this timetable does not check the category or the class.

Cars and powered two-, three- and four-wheelers enter the scheme on 1 January 2028. That is a future step and is deliberately not encoded as a rule here.

The A31, A33, A330, M674 and D83 are outside the perimeter, so a journey that only uses them is not in the zone at any hour.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Grand Nancy's low emission zone has been running since 1 January 2025 and it does not reach a car. The Métropole's calendar, and article 2 of the order that created the zone, restrict only light commercial vehicles, lorries, buses and coaches at Crit'Air 5 or unclassified; cars, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles join on 1 January 2028.

Vans owned by private individuals are out until then as well, by an explicit derogation that runs to 31 December 2027 — so today the van ban is a ban on professionally owned vans. What every driver does need inside the perimeter is a Crit'Air sticker: the order requires it on the windscreen even for a vehicle holding an exemption or a derogation.

Daily charge

There is no charge and no day rate. Grand Nancy's ZFE-m bans rather than prices: a restricted vehicle is not allowed in at a price, it is not allowed in at all unless it holds a derogation or a Pass ZFE 24h for that day. Neither the Métropole's page nor the order names a fee for either, and none is invented here.

When it operates

Permanent. Article 4 of the order is explicit: the zone applies every day, from 00:00 to 24:00.

Area covered

The road network of the twenty communes of the Métropole du Grand Nancy: Art-sur-Meurthe, Dommartemont, Essey-lès-Nancy, Fléville-devant-Nancy, Heillecourt, Houdemont, Jarville-la-Malgrange, Laneuveville-devant-Nancy, Laxou, Ludres, Malzéville, Maxéville, Nancy, Pulnoy, Saint-Max, Saulxures-lès-Nancy, Seichamps, Tomblaine, Vandœuvre and Villers-lès-Nancy.

Three motorways are carved out in both directions — the A31, the A33 and the A330 — together with the M674 and D83, and the access roads to nine park-and-ride sites. Diversions ordered by the traffic police during works, events or road incidents are outside the restrictions for as long as the diversion lasts.

Why there is no map here
The national ZFE register carries an open-licensed polygon for Grand Nancy and it measures 142.6 km², but neither the Métropole nor the order states an area to check that against, so the D-038 measurement cannot be made. The order defines the zone as the road network of twenty named communes minus five named roads and nine park-and-ride approaches; a single filled outline is the wrong shape for that rule, and drawing one would put the A31, A33 and A330 inside a zone the order expressly keeps them out of.

Petrol standard

No petrol car is restricted here yet. The Métropole's calendar brings cars — and powered two-, three- and four-wheelers — into the zone only on 1 January 2028, and then only at Crit'Air 5 and unclassified.

Diesel standard

The same: no diesel car is restricted here yet, and the 2028 step is written as a Crit'Air class rather than as a registration year. The vehicles the zone does reach today are light commercial vehicles, lorries, buses and coaches at Crit'Air 5 or unclassified.

Penalty if you do not comply

The Métropole's page does not state an amount, and neither does the order that created the zone — so the fine here is a figure that exists and that we have not read. Assume there is one.

The order cites article R.411-19-1 of the Code de la route among the provisions it rests on, which is the national article other French publishers in this corpus quote a figure from, but taking their number would be reading it off another city's page. Not estimated here.

How to comply
  • Carry a Crit'Air sticker on the windscreen if you are driving one of the restricted categories. Article 2 of the order requires it even for a vehicle that holds a national exemption or a local derogation, so an exemption is not a substitute for the sticker.
  • Check the category before the class. Today the zone reaches light commercial vehicles (N1), lorries (N2 and N3) and buses and coaches (M2 and M3) at Crit'Air 5 or unclassified. A car is a category M1 vehicle and is not in the scheme until 1 January 2028.
  • A van owned by a private individual is outside the ban until 31 December 2027 — derogation 15 in the order, written expressly so that the restriction falls on professionally owned vans first.
  • If a restricted vehicle has to go in occasionally, the order provides a Pass ZFE 24h: a 24-hour derogation to drive and park inside the zone, for social, economic or technical reasons, available to any vehicle and capped at 24 times a year.
  • Individual derogations run for three years and are applied for through the state's demarches-simplifiees.fr service or by post to the Maison de l'Habitat et du Développement Durable; the Métropole lists medical access for long-term illness, home-care services, civil-protection and social-purpose organisations, dangerous goods, trade-plate test vehicles and collection vehicles among the cases.
  • Justification has to be visible: a Pass ZFE 24h certificate is displayed behind the windscreen, or somewhere directly visible to inspectors on a vehicle that has no windscreen.
  • Three motorways stay open whatever you drive. The A31, A33 and A330 are excluded in both directions, as are the M674 and D83 and the slip roads to nine park-and-ride sites, so through traffic can pass without entering the zone.
