Driving in Ancient Olympia: Limited traffic zone

Ancient Olympia, Greece · Limited traffic zone

80407, ΦΕΚ Β' 6465/26.11.2024)

Not in force in Ancient Olympia right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 12:05 · Europe/Athens

  • Not in force Every vehicle entering the closed section of οδός Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη in Ancient Olympia — the central street between the junction with οδός Τσουρεκά and the junction with οδός Χ. Κοσμόπουλου, that is between the square of the church of the Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου and the town hall square. 🚫 The cross streets that name the ends, Τσουρεκά and Χ. Κοσμόπουλου, are not themselves closed, and neither is the remainder of Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη beyond those two junctions: the closure is «τμήματος της οδού», a section of the street, and the municipality's own drawing colours that section green and the rest of the network orange. 🔑 The exceptions cannot be expressed as a timetable because they turn on who you are rather than on the hour. Emergency vehicles — ambulance, fire service, police, civil protection — are outside the measure altogether; a vehicle displaying a valid blue disabled badge may enter during the hours; and a property on the closed section that has a legal off-street parking space may be driven to during the hours on a special municipal permit. All three are in `how_to_comply` with the municipality's own words.

Starts Tuesday, 13 October 2026 at 20:00 local time.

🚨 The window comes from the municipality, not from the gazette, and the page says so wherever it prints an hour. ΦΕΚ Β' 6465/2024 approves the measure «σύμφωνα με την υπ’ αρ. (38) σχετική κυκλοφοριακή μελέτη» — study 14/2024 — and contains no clock at all. The 20:00–07:00 window is published by Δήμος Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας on its own site, in identical terms in June 2025 and June 2026, and that municipality is the author of the council decision the gazette approved. 🚫 It must not be re-described as a gazetted hour.

⚠️ Seven days is the municipality's «καθημερινά» and not an assumption. Neither announcement gives a weekend variant, a holiday variant or a different hour for any day, so the same window is encoded for all seven.

🚨 ALL TWELVE MONTHS IS AN ADMITTED OVER-WARNING, and it is the deliberate direction. The act's word is «περιοδική» and it attaches no season; the municipality announced the start on 20 June 2025 and on 15 June 2026 and has published no end date on either occasion, and its site was searched for a closing announcement on 2026-09-24 without finding one. If the barriers are taken in for the winter, this schedule warns about a street that is open — which is safe — and it never tells a driver a closed street is open. 🚫 A winter end date must not be invented to tidy this up: no source this project holds states one.

🔑 The loading hours are not windows in this closure. «Ώρες φορτοεκφόρτωσης: Πρωί 08:00-10:00 και Απόγευμα 16:00-18:00» both fall inside the period when the street is open to traffic anyway. They restrict when deliveries may be made; they do not create a gap in the 20:00–07:00 ban. 🚫 Adding either as a window would tell a driver the street is open at a time no source says it is.

Public holidays are not encoded because no source mentions them. Neither the act nor either announcement exempts a day or a date, and «καθημερινά» draws no distinction.

The decision can lapse without another gazette issue: «Η μη τήρηση των όρων και των προϋποθέσεων που έχουν τεθεί από τους αρμοδίους φορείς καθώς και με την απόφαση αυτή συνεπάγεται την αυτοδίκαιη ανάκλησή της». That is a way this record could become wrong quietly, and it is stated rather than assumed away.

🚫 One section of one street is not the centre of Ancient Olympia. This record covers the stretch between Τσουρεκά and Χ. Κοσμόπουλου and nothing else; the 2023 act approved a whole settlement traffic scheme of one-way orders, priorities and parking places whose other items are not access restrictions and are not on this page. A street's absence from this record is not permission to drive it.

The schedule is derived from `hours` and carries no fact that is not in the sources named there.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Ancient Olympia is the seat of Δήμος Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας in Π.Ε. Ηλείας, and οδός Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη is the street the municipality's own notices mark «(κεντρική οδός)» — the one you would drive along to pass through the village. Every night from 20:00 to 07:00 a section of it — from the junction with οδός Τσουρεκά to the junction with οδός Χ.

Κοσμόπουλου, which the municipality describes as «από την πλατεία του Ι.Ν. Κοιμήσεως Θεοτόκου έως την πλατεία Δημαρχείου» — is closed to vehicles and becomes a pedestrian street. 🔑 The legal history is the reason this record exists, and it is a two-act story a reader should not have to reconstruct.

In ΦΕΚ Β' 1211/06.03.2023 the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Πελοποννήσου, Δυτικής Ελλάδας και Ιονίου approved the municipality's traffic scheme for the settlement «πλην των ακόλουθων κυκλοφοριακών ρυθμίσεων: i. Της περιοδικής πεζοδρόμησης της οδού Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη» — everything except this.

It refused because two things were missing: «πρέπει να προηγηθεί η έγκριση Κανονισμού Λειτουργίας Πεζοδρόμου και να τεκμηριωθεί η ομαλή εκτροπή της κυκλοφορίας». 🔑 Both were then supplied — council decision 64/2024 approved the pedestrian-street operating regulation, and traffic study 14/2024 documented the alternative route — and on 26 November 2024 the same authority gazetted ΦΕΚ Β' 6465/2024, which records that «εξέλειψαν οι λόγοι μη έγκρισης», approves council decision 143/2024, and states that «με την παρούσα επέρχεται τροποποίηση της υπ’ αρ.

15416/28.02.2023 (Β’ 1211) προγενέστερης απόφασης κατά το σημείο i. του αποφασιστικού της σκέλους». The exception was lifted by amending the act that made it. 🚨 What the gazette does NOT print is the operative detail.

Neither issue gives the end points of the section, the hours, or the exceptions; the 2024 act approves the measure «σύμφωνα με την υπ’ αρ.

(38) σχετική κυκλοφοριακή μελέτη και τα διαγράμματα που τη συνοδεύουν», and that study is not published in the gazette. 🔑 The municipality published the detail itself, twice, on its own site: on 17 June 2025 when the measure first came into effect and on 11 June 2026 when it was put back into effect, in the same words both times.

This record's hours, section and exceptions come from those two pages, and they are quoted on it. ⚠️ One thing no source this project holds will say: whether the measure is lifted outside the summer. The act calls it «περιοδική» and attaches no calendar; the municipality announced a start on 20 June 2025 and again on 15 June 2026 and published no end on either occasion.

The nightly window is therefore encoded for every day of the year, which over-warns in winter if the barriers come out — the safe direction, stated rather than assumed away.

Εθνικό Τυπογραφείο (National Printing House) — Εφημερίδα της Κυβερνήσεως, ΦΕΚ Β' 6465/26.11.2024, Αριθμ. 80407 of the Γραμματέας Αποκεντρωμένης Διοίκησης Πελοποννήσου, Δυτικής Ελλάδας και Ιονίου, signed at Patras on 1 November 2024, read together with ΦΕΚ Β' 1211/06.03.2023 for the exception it lifted and with the Δήμος Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας announcements of 17 June 2025 and 11 June 2026 for the operative detail the gazette leaves to the traffic study

Daily charge

Nothing is charged and there is nothing to buy in advance.

The act is a traffic-regulation approval under article 52 of the Highway Code; it creates no permit sold to visitors, no day ticket and no tariff, and it records that «από την παρούσα απόφαση δεν προκαλείται δαπάνη σε βάρος του κρατικού προϋπολογισμού», putting the cost of the signing on the municipality. ⚠️ One permit exists and it is not for visitors: the municipality's 2025 and 2026 announcements say that properties along the closed section which have a legal off-street parking space may drive in during the hours of the measure «κατόπιν έκδοσης ειδικής άδειας από τον Δήμο» — on a special permit issued by the municipality.

Neither announcement prices it and neither says how it is applied for. ⚠️ A second document could in principle carry a charge and this project has not read it: the Κανονισμός Λειτουργίας Πεζοδρόμου approved by council decision 64/2024 (ΑΔΑ 6ΝΖΨΩΨ5-9Ρ0), which the gazette names as the precondition of the whole scheme.

It is not in the gazette, and diavgeia.gov.gr, the national transparency register where it sits, disallows /doc/*, /decision/view and /luminapi/api/decisions/* in its robots.txt — measured for this corpus in cycle 65 and unchanged. So this is an unread document rather than a document known to contain no charge.

When it operates

Every day, from 20:00 to 07:00 the following morning. The municipality prints it as a single line in both of its announcements — «Χρόνος εφαρμογής των ρυθμίσεων (καθημερινά): από 20:00 έως 07:00» in 2026, and «Χρόνος εφαρμογής των ρυθμίσεων – ωράριο καθημερινά: από 20:00 μέχρι 07:00» in 2025 — and the word «καθημερινά» is doing the work: it is every day, not Monday to Friday.

There is no weekend variant, no holiday variant and no different summer hour. 🚨 The hours are NOT in the gazette, and that is worth stating plainly rather than leaving a reader to assume they are. ΦΕΚ Β' 6465/2024 approves the measure «σύμφωνα με την υπ’ αρ.

(38) σχετική κυκλοφοριακή μελέτη» — traffic study 14/2024 — and prints no clock of any kind; ΦΕΚ Β' 1211/2023, which it amends, prints none either.

The two municipal announcements are the publisher of the hours, and they are the municipality that made the decision the gazette approved. 🔑 Two further hour ranges appear in the same announcements and they are NOT windows in this closure: «Ώρες φορτοεκφόρτωσης: Πρωί 08:00-10:00 και Απόγευμα 16:00-18:00», the hours for loading and unloading.

Both fall wholly inside the period when the street is open to traffic anyway, so they do not open the night closure — they confine deliveries to two slots during the day. 🚫 Do not read them as exemptions from the 20:00–07:00 ban. ⚠️ And one question the sources do not answer: whether the nightly closure runs all year.

The act's own word is «περιοδική», periodic, and it attaches no season and no calendar date; the municipality announced the start on Friday 20 June 2025 and again on Monday 15 June 2026 — «Σας υπενθυμίζουμε ότι από την Δευτέρα 15 Ιουνίου 2026 θέτουμε σε ισχύ το μέτρο» — and published nothing to say it ends. The site was searched for a closing announcement on 2026-09-24 and there is none.

This record therefore encodes the window for all twelve months, which over-warns in winter if the barriers are in fact taken in, and never under-warns.

Δήμος Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας, official municipal website, announcement «Έναρξη Περιοδικής Πεζοδρόμησης από τη Δευτέρα 15 Ιουνίου 2026», published 11 June 2026 — the municipality whose council decision 143/2024 the gazette approves, publishing the operative detail that the gazette left to the unpublished traffic study

Area covered

One section of one street, in the middle of a village laid out along it. In the municipality's own words the measure is an «Απαγόρευση εισόδου κυκλοφορίας οχημάτων στην οδό Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη (κεντρική οδός), από τη διασταύρωση με την οδό Τσουρεκά έως τη διασταύρωση με την οδό Χ. Κοσμόπουλου (από την πλατεία του Ι.Ν.

Κοιμήσεως Θεοτόκου έως την πλατεία Δημαρχείου)» — the central street, from the Τσουρεκά junction to the Χ.

Κοσμόπουλου junction, or, given as landmarks, from the square of the church of the Dormition of the Theotokos to the town hall square. 🔑 The gazette gives only «τμήματος της οδού Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη», a section of the street, with no end points at all; the end points on this page are the municipality's, published identically in June 2025 and June 2026. ✅ There is a drawing, it is the publisher's own, and a driver can look at it: the municipality's 2025 announcement carries a plan of the village with the closed section coloured green under the legend «Περιοδική πεζοδρόμηση οδού» and the diversion coloured orange under «Εναλλακτική διαδρομή κυκλοφορίας λόγω της περιοδικής πεζοδρόμησης».

It shows the closed stretch running along the middle of the village grid with the diversion looping around the blocks on both sides to rejoin at each end, and two direction labels off its left-hand edge, «από/προς Δρούβα» and «από/προς Αρχαιολογικό χώρο». 🚫 It is a raster scan and carries no coordinates, no scale bar and no grid, so it is a picture rather than geometry; tracing a line from it would be this project's line and not the municipality's, which D-096 forbids presenting as the latter. 🚫 Neither gazette issue publishes a coordinate of any kind — no ΕΓΣΑ 87 table, no sign position, no bounding point — and the diagrams the 2024 act governs by are the ones accompanying traffic study 14/2024, which is not published with it. ⚠️ Physically the closure is enforced at the entrance rather than along the length: the municipality wrote in 2025 that «στην αρχή της Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη θα τοποθετηθούν οδοφράγματα (κινητά εμπόδια διέλευσης) έως την οριστική προμήθεια και τοποθέτηση σύγχρονης ειδικής μπάρας ελεγχόμενης διέλευσης» — movable barriers at the start of the street, pending a controlled-access bar.

This project holds nothing that says whether the bar has since been installed.

Why there is no map here
The drawing exists, it is the publisher's own, it is legible, and it is a picture. The municipality's 2025 announcement carries a plan of the village with a legend in two entries — «Περιοδική πεζοδρόμηση οδού» in green, «Εναλλακτική διαδρομή κυκλοφορίας λόγω της περιοδικής πεζοδρόμησης» in orange — and it shows the closed stretch of Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη running along the middle of the grid with the diversion looping round the blocks on both sides to rejoin at each end, and two direction labels off its left-hand edge, «από/προς Δρούβα» and «από/προς Αρχαιολογικό χώρο». ✅ That is genuinely useful to a driver and it is linked as `map_url` for that reason. 🚫 It is not geometry. Measured on 2026-09-24, the file at the address above is a 2 560 × 1 674 baseline JPEG scan of 973 380 bytes — it carries a north arrow and street names, and no coordinates, no scale bar, no grid and no georeferencing of any kind; deriving a polygon from it would mean tracing a raster by eye, and the line produced would be this project's line while looking exactly as authoritative as the municipality's — which D-096 forbids. 🚫 Nor does the gazette help. Neither ΦΕΚ Β' 6465/2024 nor ΦΕΚ Β' 1211/2023 publishes a coordinate of any kind, no ΕΓΣΑ 87 table and no sign position; the 2024 act governs by «τα διαγράμματα που τη συνοδεύουν», the diagrams accompanying traffic study 14/2024, and that study is not published with it. ⚠️ It does not heal by asking the register: the council decisions behind both acts sit on diavgeia.gov.gr, which disallows /doc/*, /decision/view and /luminapi/api/decisions/* in its own robots.txt. It would heal if the municipality published the study's diagrams as data, or published the closure in its open-data or GIS channel, neither of which was found on arxaiaolympia.gov.gr on 2026-09-24.

The authority's own map: Δήμος Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας, on its own website, beside the announcement of 17 June…

Petrol standard

This scheme sets no emission threshold, and the absence is structural rather than unrecorded. A pedestrianisation asks whether a vehicle may be on the street at all, not what comes out of its exhaust.

No Euro class, no fuel type and no registration year appears anywhere in either gazette issue or in either municipal announcement; the only vehicle properties that matter here are whether a vehicle is an emergency vehicle, whether it displays a valid blue disabled badge, and whether it is going to a legal off-street parking space on the closed section.

Diesel standard

The same as for petrol and for the same structural reason: nothing in the acts or the announcements distinguishes one engine from another, and the exemptions the municipality publishes turn on what the vehicle is doing and who is in it rather than on what it burns.

Penalty if you do not comply
€350.00 Neither gazette issue prints a figure and neither municipal announcement does; every number here is read from ν. 5209/2025, the Greek Highway Code, which was read independently for this record on 2026-09-24 — 846 956 characters through scripts/read-source.mjs, each provision located in that text with scripts/grep-normalised.py — rather than inherited from this corpus's other Greek entries. 🔑 The chain closes on the noun. The Code prohibits driving «σε πλατείες, πεζόδρομους, πεζοδρόμια» and the question on every Greek page here is whether the local measure's own word maps onto the Code's noun «πεζόδρομος». It does, three times over: the gazette's own title is «περιοδική πεζοδρόμηση τμήματος της οδού», the precondition the 2023 act imposed and the 2024 act records as satisfied is an «έγκριση Κανονισμού Λειτουργίας Πεζοδρόμου» — an operating regulation FOR A PEDESTRIAN STREET — and the municipality calls the closed stretch «το πεζοδρομημένο τμήμα» throughout. 🔑 Two routes, and a driver should plan for the worse. (1) Article 20 §4 forbids a driver to circulate on pedestrian streets «εκτός από περιπτώσεις απολύτου ανάγκης ή όταν ειδικές ρυθμίσεις το επιτρέπουν»; article 20 §8 β) classifies a breach of §4 «στην κατηγορία Ε3-Β και στην κατηγορία Σ»; article 108 §5 γ) γα) prices a category Ε3 breach at «διοικητικό πρόστιμο τριακοσίων πενήντα (350) ευρώ», §5 γ) γβ) adds withdrawal of the driving licence and of the vehicle's registration documents for thirty (30) days, and §5 δ) adds a further forty (40) days' withdrawal of the licence for the category Σ classification. That is the €350 published here. (2) If instead the officer writes it up as failing to obey the sign, the municipality describes what stands there as an «Απαγόρευση εισόδου κυκλοφορίας οχημάτων», which is the Ρ-7 plate — «Ρ-7: Απαγορεύεται η είσοδος σε όλα τα οχήματα» — and article 7 §11 ε) classifies failing to obey Ρ-7 in category Ε2-Β: €150 under article 108 §5 β) βα) plus twenty (20) days' withdrawal of the licence under §5 β) ββ), with no measure against the vehicle's documents and no forty-day Σ addition. 🚨 NO SIGN CODE IS GAZETTED HERE, and that is why route (2) is described rather than cited from the act. Unlike the Papagou and Sifnos acts, which order «Ρ7 & Ρ55» in terms, neither ΦΕΚ Β' 6465/2024 nor ΦΕΚ Β' 1211/2023 names a plate; the 2024 act only directs that «η επί τόπου τοποθέτηση των κατάλληλων πινακίδων σήμανσης καθώς και η οριζόντια διαγράμμιση θα εκτελεστεί με μέριμνα του αρμόδιου τμήματος του Δήμου Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας». The Ρ-7 identification is this project reading the municipality's plain-language description against the Code's own sign list, and it is labelled as such. ⚠️ For a visitor in a hire car the measure against the vehicle's papers is a matter between the renter and the rental company, which the Code does not address. ⚠️ One document could narrow all of this and could not be read: the Κανονισμός Λειτουργίας Πεζοδρόμου, council decision 64/2024, which article 2 §56 of the Code expressly allows to vary the access rights a pedestrian street otherwise carries — «εκτός αν άλλως ορίζεται από τον κανονισμό λειτουργίας τους». It is not in the gazette and diavgeia.gov.gr is closed to this project by its own robots.txt.

Article 2 §56 for the definition of a pedestrian street, for the abutting-property entry and exit it allows and for the operating regulation's power to vary it; article 20 §4 and §8 β) for driving on one and for the category it falls in; article 7 §11 ε) for the classification of failing to obey a Ρ-7 plate; article 108 §5 β), γ) and δ) for the tariffs and the licence measures

How to comply
  • Between 20:00 and 07:00, every day, do not drive into οδός Πραξιτέλους Κονδύλη between the οδός Τσουρεκά junction and the οδός Χ. Κοσμόπουλου junction — that is, between the square of the church of the Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου and the town hall square. This is the village's main street and the stretch you would otherwise use to drive through Ancient Olympia.
  • 🔑 Go round instead, and the municipality has drawn the way. Its 2025 announcement carries a plan with the closed section in green and the diversion in orange — «Εναλλακτική διαδρομή κυκλοφορίας λόγω της περιοδικής πεζοδρόμησης» — looping around the blocks on either side and rejoining at both ends. The traffic study the gazette relies on is the reason the closure was allowed at all: the approval records that «από την υπ’ αρ. (38) σχετική κυκλοφοριακή μελέτη τεκμηριώνεται η λειτουργία εναλλακτικής διαδρομής για την εξυπηρέτηση της διαμπερούς κυκλοφορίας».
  • 🔑 There is a physical barrier at the entrance, not just a sign. The municipality placed «οδοφράγματα (κινητά εμπόδια διέλευσης)» at the start of the street in 2025, pending «οριστική προμήθεια και τοποθέτηση σύγχρονης ειδικής μπάρας ελεγχόμενης διέλευσης» — a controlled-access bar. Expect to be stopped by something solid rather than to be waved through.
  • 🚫 Do not stop or park on the section during the hours either. The measure includes «Απαγόρευση στάσης και στάθμευσης κατά τις παραπάνω ημέρες και ώρες εφαρμογής του μέτρου, σε όλο το μήκος του πεζοδρομημένου τμήματος» — along the whole length, not just at the ends.
  • 🔑 Emergency vehicles are outside the measure altogether: «Από τα μέτρα εξαιρούνται τα οχήματα έκτακτης ανάγκης, όπως ασθενοφόρα, πυροσβεστικά οχήματα, αστυνομία και πολιτική προστασία».
  • 🔑 A valid blue disabled badge lets you in. The municipality's words are «Τα οχήματα ΑμεΑ, τα οποία διαθέτουν μπλε κάρτα ΑμεΑ σε ισχύ, θα μπορούν επίσης να εισέρχονται στο πεζοδρομημένο τμήμα κατά τις ημέρες και ώρες λειτουργίας των μέτρων» — during the days and hours the measures operate.
  • 🔑 If you are staying somewhere on the closed stretch that has its own off-street parking, there is a permit and you must get it first. «Οι ιδιοκτησίες κατά μήκος του πεζοδρομημένου τμήματος που διαθέτουν νόμιμο χώρο στάθμευσης εκτός οδού (εντός της ιδιοκτησίας τους) θα μπορούν να εισέρχονται … κατόπιν έκδοσης ειδικής άδειας από τον Δήμο.» ⚠️ This project could not read what the permit costs, how it is applied for or how long it takes — ask the property, and ask before the day you arrive.
  • 🔑 Deliveries have their own two slots, and they are in the daytime, not in the closure. «Ώρες φορτοεκφόρτωσης: Πρωί 08:00-10:00 και Απόγευμα 16:00-18:00.» 🚫 Neither slot opens the 20:00–07:00 ban — both fall in the period when the street is open to traffic anyway.
  • 🔑 The bus is not affected and will take a different line. «Οι παραπάνω ρυθμίσεις δεν επηρεάζουν τη λειτουργία της δημόσιας συγκοινωνίας όσον αφορά τις αδειοδοτημένες στάσεις λεωφορείων. Η διαδρομή του υπεραστικού λεωφορείου θα παρακάμπτει το συγκεκριμένο τμήμα της οδού.» If you are arriving by KTEL, the stops stand.
  • ⚠️ Assume the closure operates in winter too, because nothing says it does not. The act calls the measure «περιοδική» and gives no season; the municipality announced it starting on 20 June 2025 and again on 15 June 2026 and published no end date either time. This page therefore warns every night of the year, which may over-warn out of season — but a barrier you were not expecting is worse than a barrier that is not there.
  • ⚠️ The cost of getting it wrong is up to €350 plus licence measures, and it comes from the Highway Code rather than from the act, which prints no figure. See `penalty` for the two routes and the difference between them.
  • 🚫 There is one document this page could not read, and it is the one that governs driving on the street once it is a pedestrian street: the Κανονισμός Λειτουργίας Πεζοδρόμου approved by council decision 64/2024. It is not in the gazette and the national transparency register that holds it disallows its document paths. If it admits a category of traffic this page does not mention, this page over-warns for that category, which is the safe direction.
  • 🚫 Nothing here says the rest of Ancient Olympia is unrestricted. The 2023 act approved a whole settlement traffic scheme — one-way orders, priorities, parking places, including places reserved for the archaeological service — and this record covers only the nightly closure of one section. Park outside the green stretch and walk in — the municipality's plan labels its left-hand edge «από/προς Αρχαιολογικό χώρο», to and from the archaeological site.
