Driving in Karpathos: Limited traffic zone

Karpathos, Greece · Limited traffic zone

Official name «την απαγόρευση εισόδου οχημάτων εντός της παραλιακής οδού Πηγαδιών από το Αμφιθέατρο μέχρι το λιμάνι» — the operative measure of αριθμ. 38091/ΜΟΕ of the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Αιγαίου, «Έγκριση κυκλοφοριακών ρυθμίσεων στην παραλιακή οδό Πηγαδιών, Δημοτικής Κοινότητας Καρπάθου», signed at Piraeus on 28 June 2017 and published as the fourth item of ΦΕΚ Β' 2390/14.07.2017

Not in force in Karpathos right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 12:04 · Europe/Athens

  • Not in force Every vehicle on the seafront road of Πηγάδια between the Αμφιθέατρο and the harbour. The act orders two signs Ρ-7 and nothing else; ν. 5209/2025 article 7 §3 ζ) defines Ρ-7 as «Απαγορεύεται η είσοδος σε όλα τα οχήματα», no entry for all vehicles, and unlike the Ρ-55 pedestrian-street sign it carries no statutory carve-out for emergency vehicles or for reaching a property on the road. No supplementary plate is ordered, so no class of vehicle is named as exempt. 🚨 The act's own exemption is not a class of vehicle at all — it is the window around a ferry call, and it is deliberately absent from this timetable because it has no hours.

Starts Tuesday, 13 October 2026 at 19:00 local time.

🚨 THE BIGGEST LIMIT OF THIS TIMETABLE IS THAT IT CANNOT SEE THE FERRY. The act exempts «δύο (2) ώρες πριν και δύο (2) ώρες μετά από την άφιξη και την αναχώρηση αντίστοιχα της ακτοπλοϊκής γραμμής», and the closure it interrupts is only six hours long. A verdict of "in force" here therefore means "in force unless a ship is due", and on an evening with a sailing it can be wrong for hours at a stretch. It errs towards warning a driver off a road that may be open, which is the safe direction, but it is an over-warning and it is stated rather than hidden. Look up the sailings for Κάρπαθος before relying on it.

The window crosses midnight and is encoded that way, 19:00 to 01:00. The small hours belong to the previous evening's closure.

⚠️ The last night of the season therefore ends on 16 October. The act names 15 October as the last day; the closure that begins at 19:00 that evening runs to 01:00, which is the 16th. The 16th is excepted as a whole day here, so a one-hour under-warning falls on exactly one morning of the year — stated rather than papered over.

🚨 This timetable cannot tell you whether the rule has commenced. Condition 3 of the approval makes the measures effective «από την τοποθέτηση των οικείων πινακίδων σήμανσης, των σηματοδοτών ή των διαγραμμίσεων στο οδόστρωμα, εκτός αν κατά τον χρόνο ισχύος των μέτρων αυτών η κυκλοφορία ρυθμίζεται από στελέχη της αρμόδιας Αστυνομικής Αρχής» — from the placing of the signs, unless an officer is directing traffic at the time. No publisher has dated the placing, which is why this record states no date on which the scheme took effect, and a police officer on the quay overrides the sign in either direction.

⚠️ Condition 4 is unusual and it cuts the other way: «Την αυτοδίκαιη ανάκλησή της, σε περίπτωση μη τήρησης των όρων και των προϋποθέσεων που έχουν τεθεί» — the approval is revoked automatically if its conditions are not kept. Nothing published says whether that has ever happened, so this record can only report the approval as gazetted.

This covers the seafront road of Πηγάδια and nothing else on Karpathos. The same issue of the gazette carries three other municipal measures — loading bays in Rethymno, a no-stopping street in Heraklion and a summer closure at Κάτω Γατζέα in Thessaly — and none of them belongs to this island or to this timetable.

Public holidays are not encoded, because the act does not mention them. It exempts no day, and 15 August falls inside the season.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Πηγάδια is the harbour town of Karpathos, the long thin island between Crete and Rhodes, and for six months of the year its seafront is closed to traffic in the evening.

The act's operative sentence is one long one: «Εγκρίνουμε τις κυκλοφοριακές ρυθμίσεις στην Δημοτική Κοινότητα Καρπάθου και συγκεκριμένα την απαγόρευση εισόδου οχημάτων εντός της παραλιακής οδού Πηγαδιών από το Αμφιθέατρο μέχρι το λιμάνι με τοποθέτηση (2) δυο πινακίδων (Ρ-7) … για την περίοδο από 15 Απριλίου έως και 15 Οκτωβρίου κάθε έτους και για τις ώρες από 19:00 έως τη 01:00».

Two no-entry signs, at two positions the act fixes in survey coordinates, close roughly 350 metres of quayside from seven in the evening until one the next morning. 🚨 AND THEN THE ACT OPENS IT AGAIN FOR THE FERRY, AND THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE ON THIS PAGE: «Εξαιρείται η περίοδος δύο (2) ώρες πριν και δύο (2) ώρες μετά από την άφιξη και την αναχώρηση αντίστοιχα της ακτοπλοϊκής γραμμής».

The exempt period is two hours before the arrival and two hours after the departure — respectively — of the coastal shipping line. 🔑 No other exception in this corpus is measured from a timetable somebody else publishes. Every Greek closure held here opens by clock, by calendar, by vehicle class or by a plate on the post; this one opens when a ship is due.

Since the whole closure lasts only six hours, a single evening sailing can lift most of it or all of it — and nothing in the gazette says when the ship comes. 🚫 THIS RECORD THEREFORE CANNOT TELL YOU WHETHER THE ROAD IS OPEN AT A GIVEN MINUTE, AND IT SAYS SO RATHER THAN PRETENDING OTHERWISE.

The timetable below encodes the closure the act prints and leaves the ferry carve-out out of it, because the carve-out has no hours to encode: it has a ship.

If you are driving the quay between 19:00 and 01:00 in season, look up the sailings for Κάρπαθος on the day, and read the two signs — they are what stands on the ground. 🔑 THE SIGN AND THE AUTHORITY'S OWN WORDS AGREE HERE, WHICH IS WORTH STATING BECAUSE THEY DO NOT ALWAYS. The sentence says «απαγόρευση εισόδου οχημάτων» and the sign it orders is Ρ-7, which ν.

5209/2025 article 7 §3 ζ) defines as «Απαγορεύεται η είσοδος σε όλα τα οχήματα» — no entry for all vehicles. The act's prose merely leaves out the word «όλα». 🚫 Do not read a residents' or frontage-access exemption into that: Ρ-7 has none of its own, unlike the Ρ-55 pedestrian-street sign most Greek towns in this corpus use, and this act prints no supplementary plate at all.

The meaning of Ρ-7 is from ν. 5209/2025, cited separately below.

Daily charge

Nothing is charged and there is nothing to buy. The measure is a κυκλοφοριακή ρύθμιση approved under articles 52 §1, 52Α and 109 of the Highway Code, and its operative word is «απαγόρευση εισόδου» — a prohibition of entry. No permit, sticker, resident pass, visitor pass or price appears anywhere in the act or in the seven conditions attached to its approval.

The only money the act names is its own cost: «δαπάνη ύψους 200 €» for the signs, charged to the municipality's own budget. 🚫 Do not read the absence of a price as free access during the closed hours: there is no price because there is no way to buy your way in. The one thing that opens the road is a ship, and it opens it for everybody at once.

When it operates

Seven in the evening until one the next morning, every day, from 15 April to 15 October: «για την περίοδο από 15 Απριλίου έως και 15 Οκτωβρίου κάθε έτους και για τις ώρες από 19:00 έως τη 01:00».

That is six hours closed and eighteen open, and «κάθε έτους» — each year — is the act's own word, so the season repeats without needing to be re-gazetted. 🚨 THE ONE EXCEPTION IS A FERRY AND THIS PROJECT CANNOT PUT IT ON A CLOCK. «Εξαιρείται η περίοδος δύο (2) ώρες πριν και δύο (2) ώρες μετά από την άφιξη και την αναχώρηση αντίστοιχα της ακτοπλοϊκής γραμμής» — the exempt period runs from two hours before the arrival to two hours after the departure of the coastal line.

Read with «αντίστοιχα», that is one continuous window bracketing the ship's call, not two separate ones. The closure it interrupts is only six hours long, so an evening call can leave very little of it standing; a ship berthing at 21:00 and sailing at 22:00 would open 19:00 to midnight on that reading, and a berth after 23:00 would open the whole evening. 🚫 None of that is a schedule this record may publish.

The act names no ship, no line, no port of call and no timetable, and the number of evening sailings to Κάρπαθος is not a fact this project holds. ⚠️ THE SEASON IS EXACT AT BOTH ENDS AND BOTH ARE MID-MONTH. «Από 15 Απριλίου έως και 15 Οκτωβρίου» includes 15 October — «έως και» — so April and October are split months and the timetable below excepts their out-of-season days one by one rather than rounding either way.

Outside the season the quay is an ordinary road at every hour. ⚠️ The act names no weekday, no public holiday and no delivery window. It exempts no day of the week, and 15 August — the busiest day of the Greek summer — falls inside the season with nothing said about it.

Area covered

One stretch of quayside: «εντός της παραλιακής οδού Πηγαδιών από το Αμφιθέατρο μέχρι το λιμάνι» — inside the seafront road of Πηγάδια, from the Amphitheatre to the harbour. The act then fixes where the two signs stand, in the Greek national grid and with its own qualifier: «στα σημεία με ενδεικτικές συντεταγμένες σε ΕΓΣΑ 87 Α:(Χ=791195, Υ=3933933) και Β:(Χ=791536, Υ=3933859)».

It also orders a yellow kerb marking over almost the same run, «από το σημείο … Γ:(Χ=791197, Υ=3933937) έως και το Δ:(Χ=791506, Υ=3933976)». ⚠️ «ΕΝΔΕΙΚΤΙΚΕΣ» IS THE PUBLISHER'S OWN WORD AND THIS RECORD KEEPS IT. Indicative coordinates fix roughly where two posts stand.

They are not a boundary, they do not draw one, and the act never claims they do. What defines the regulated place is the sentence: the seafront road, between those two ends.

Converted internally as a check rather than as a published fact, the two signed points lie about 348 m apart, and the yellow marking runs about 311 m between its own two ends — so this is a few hundred metres of quay, not a town centre. 🔑 ON THE GROUND THE CLOSURE CARRIES TWO STREET NAMES, AND NEITHER OF THEM IS THE GAZETTE'S WORD. Queried on 2026-09-28, OpenStreetMap names no «παραλιακή» street in Πηγάδια at all.

The nearest named way to the act's western sign is Κων/Νου Μ. Φελλούζη Δημάρχου, 50 m away and tagged as a secondary road; the nearest to the eastern sign is Ρήγα Φεραίου, 10 m away and residential, with three of its segments inside 83 m.

So one closure, one sentence, two street names — and a driver looking for a road called «παραλιακή» will not find one on a map. 🚫 That is the map's vocabulary rather than a contradiction of the gazette: the act is describing the shore road by what it is, not by what it is signed. ⚠️ AND THE HARBOUR THE ACT MEANS IS NOT THE ONE THE MAP PINS.

OpenStreetMap carries a ferry terminal node on Karpathos at a point 555 to 586 m north of both of the act's signed positions — measured, not estimated. The act's «λιμάνι» is therefore the quay in front of the town, at the eastern end of this stretch, and not that node. 🔑 The distinction matters because the act's one exemption is a ferry: the ship you are waiting for does not berth at the sign.

Why there is no map here
The act names a drawing and the gazette does not carry it. Its second recital cites «την από 13.4.2017 εισήγηση και μελέτη (τεχνική έκθεση και τοπογραφικό διάγραμμα) της Τεχνικής Υπηρεσίας του Δήμου Καρπάθου», a topographic diagram, and condition 7 binds the municipality to it — but measured on 2026-09-28 the eight-page issue contains 0 image objects and 37 749 characters of text, so the diagram is referred to and not published. ⚠️ Unlike the Nisyros and Heraklion acts in this corpus, there is nothing here to look at and rule unusable: there is nothing here. What the act does publish is four ΕΓΣΑ 87 pairs that it calls «ενδεικτικές» — indicative — two for the signs and two for a kerb marking. A point its own publisher declines to call exact cannot be inflated into a polygon, and four points do not enclose anything. 🚫 Drawing the Δήμος Καρπάθου relation would be the opposite error by three orders of magnitude: the municipality is most of a 300 km² island and this measure is about 350 m of quay. The city-level warning stands instead, and the regulated extent is stated in words — the shore road, between the Amphitheatre and the harbour.

Petrol standard

This scheme sets no emission threshold, and the absence is structural rather than unrecorded. The measure asks where you are, what the date is, what time it is and whether a ship is due. It asks nothing at all about the vehicle: no Euro class, no fuel type and no registration year appears anywhere in the act.

A brand-new car is barred from the quay at nine on a July evening exactly as a twenty-year-old one is.

Diesel standard

The same as for petrol, and for the same structural reason: the act contains no emission class of any kind, for any fuel. ⚠️ Worth stating explicitly for diesel, because a reader arriving from this corpus's Italian, Spanish or German pages will expect a diesel-specific rung and there is none here. An electric car is inside this closure too.

Penalty if you do not comply
€150.00 €150 AND twenty days without a driving licence. The act prints no figure; every step below was read on the statute on 2026-09-28 for this record rather than inherited from this corpus's other Greek pages, and the chain closes without a single inference — the act names the sign, the Code names the sign in its penalty list, and the list names the amount.Source: Εθνικό Τυπογραφείο, read 2026-09-28

Εθνικό Τυπογραφείο — Εφημερίδα της Κυβερνήσεως, ΦΕΚ Α' 100/13.06.2025: ν. 5209/2025, «Κώδικας Οδικής Κυκλοφορίας» — article 7 §11 ε), which names Ρ-7 explicitly among the signs whose breach «κατατάσσονται στην κατηγορία Ε2-Β», and article 108 §5 β), which prices Ε2-Β. Article 7 §3 ζ) supplies the sign's meaning and §3 ξ) the Ρ-55 contrast the record draws.

How to comply
  • From 15 April to 15 October, do not drive onto the seafront of Πηγάδια between 19:00 and 01:00. The closed stretch is the shore road from the Amphitheatre to the harbour — a few hundred metres of quay, with a no-entry sign at each end.
  • 🚨 BUT CHECK THE FERRY BEFORE YOU BELIEVE THAT, BECAUSE THE ACT ITSELF OPENS THE ROAD FOR IT. The exemption reads «Εξαιρείται η περίοδος δύο (2) ώρες πριν και δύο (2) ώρες μετά από την άφιξη και την αναχώρηση αντίστοιχα της ακτοπλοϊκής γραμμής» — two hours before the arrival and two hours after the departure of the coastal line. The closure lasts six hours, so an evening sailing can lift most of it. 🚫 This project cannot tell you when the ship comes: the act names no line and no timetable, and no schedule is published in the gazette. Look up the day's sailings for Κάρπαθος, and read the signs when you get there.
  • The eighteen hours from 01:00 to 19:00 are open. If you are loading a boat, moving a hire car or dropping luggage at the quay in high summer, that is the part of the day the act leaves you unconditionally.
  • 🚫 There is no residents' exemption and no frontage-access exemption, and that is a real difference from most Greek closures in this corpus. The sign ordered here is Ρ-7, «Απαγορεύεται η είσοδος σε όλα τα οχήματα». The pedestrian-street sign Ρ-55, which many Greek towns use, admits emergency vehicles and vehicles entering or leaving a property on the street by the Highway Code's own definition; Ρ-7 admits nobody, and this act adds no supplementary plate. If you live on the quay, the gazette does not let you drive to your door between seven and one.
  • Outside 15 April to 15 October the seafront is an ordinary road at every hour. The act applies «για την περίοδο από 15 Απριλίου έως και 15 Οκτωβρίου κάθε έτους», and «κάθε έτους» means the season comes back every year without being re-published.
  • ⚠️ Do not look for a street called «παραλιακή». Measured against OpenStreetMap on 2026-09-28, the closed run carries at least two names on the map — Κων/Νου Μ. Φελλούζη Δημάρχου at the western end and Ρήγα Φεραίου at the eastern — and no way there is named after the shore. The signs, not the street name, tell you where you are.
  • ⚠️ A yellow kerb marking runs almost the whole length of the closure, from a point the act calls Γ to a point it calls Δ. It is part of the same approval and it is not a separate rule about hours — but a yellow line on a Greek kerb is a stopping and parking prohibition in its own right, and this record does not state its terms because the act does not.
  • If you are stopped, the cost is not only the fine. Measured on ν. 5209/2025 on 2026-09-28: article 7 §11 ε) lists «τις πινακίδες Ρ-7, Ρ-8, Ρ-9, …» and their combination with supplementary plates in category Ε2-Β, and article 108 §5 β) prices Ε2-Β as «το διοικητικό πρόστιμο της υποκατηγορίας Ε2-Α», which is «εκατόν πενήντα (150) ευρώ», «και το διοικητικό μέτρο αφαίρεσης της άδειας οδήγησης για είκοσι (20) ημέρες». 🔑 Nothing in that chain had to be inferred: the act names the sign, the Code's list names the sign, and the tariff names the number.
  • An officer on the quay outranks the sign. Condition 3 of the approval applies the measures «από την τοποθέτηση των οικείων πινακίδων σήμανσης … εκτός αν κατά τον χρόνο ισχύος των μέτρων αυτών η κυκλοφορία ρυθμίζεται από στελέχη της αρμόδιας Αστυνομικής Αρχής» — unless traffic is being directed by the police at the time. On a ferry night in August that is not a hypothetical.
