Driving in Skala Kallonis: Limited traffic zone

Skala Kallonis, Greece · Limited traffic zone

Official name Περιοδική πεζοδρόμηση τμήματος της κεντρικής οδού που οδηγεί στη πλατεία, στον οικισμό Σκάλας Καλλονής Δήμου Δυτικής Λέσβου (αποφ. Δ.Σ. 153/2024, ΦΕΚ Β' 4055/28.07.2025)

Not in force in Skala Kallonis right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 12:05 · Europe/Athens

  • Not in force Every vehicle on the section of the central road leading to the square of Skala Kallonis from the west, the north and the east, bounded by the act's sign positions 9, 10, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The act orders sign Ρ-55 at each of those, and the Greek Highway Code's definition of a πεζόδρομος admits pedestrians and vehicles going in and out of a property on the street; those exemptions cannot be expressed as a timetable and are described in `how_to_comply`.

🔑 The window crosses midnight and is encoded that way, 18:00 to 01:00. «01:00 το βράδυ» is one in the morning: the first hour of the following day is inside the closure. 🚫 It must not be flattened to an end of 00:00, which would say the street reopens an hour early every night of the season.

⚠️ The last night of the season therefore ends on 1 October. The act names 30 September as the last day of the period; the window that opens on that evening runs until 01:00, which is October. The schedule encodes the season by month, so the small hours of 1 October fall outside it — a one-hour under-warning on exactly one night of the year, stated here rather than papered over.

🚨 This timetable cannot tell you whether the rule has commenced. The act makes the measures effective «από την τοποθέτηση των οικείων πινακί-δων σήμανσης» — from the installation of the signs — and gives no date for that, so a verdict of "in force" means "in force whenever the signs are up". That is why `effective_from` is null.

This covers one stretch of one road in Skala Kallonis and nothing else. The same gazette item closes streets in Mithymna and Vasilika under different seasons and different hours; those are separate records, and nothing here describes them.

The exceptions cannot be seen by a timetable. Vehicles going in and out of a property on the closed stretch are admitted by the Highway Code's own definition of a πεζόδρομος at every hour the rule is in force, so for them the schedule over-warns in every window.

Public holidays are not encoded, because the act does not mention them. It exempts no day, and 15 August falls inside the season.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Skala Kallonis is the little port on the gulf in the middle of Lesbos — the one people drive to for the beach, the tavernas on the front and the flamingos in the salt pans — and for five months of the year its centre closes to traffic every evening. From 1 May to 30 September, between 18:00 and 01:00, the section of the central road that leads to the square from the west, the north and the east is a pedestrian street.

The rule is clause Α) of a decision of the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Αιγαίου, signed at Piraeus on 18 July 2025 and gazetted on 28 July 2025, approving decision 153/2024 of the municipal council of Δήμος Δυτικής Λέσβου. 🔑 This gazette item is one decision carrying three separate closures in three settlements of the same municipality — Skala Kallonis, Mithymna and Vasilika — each with its own season, its own clock and its own coordinate table, and each published here as its own record. 🔑 Unlike most of the Greek closures in this corpus, the act defines the closed length by naming the sign positions that bound it: «οροθετείται από τις θέσεις των πινακίδων 9,10, 3, 4, 5, 6 και 7», and then prints all eleven positions in the Greek national grid with the sign codes that stand at each.

That is the most complete signing table this project has yet read out of a Greek pedestrianisation.

Daily charge

Nothing is charged and there is nothing to buy. The clause closes a street for part of the evening during one season; it creates no permit, no day ticket and no resident scheme, and no figure of any kind appears in it. ⚠️ It does defer to a standing municipal pedestrianisation regulation — «σύμφωνα με τα προβλεπόμενα στον ισχύοντα κανονισμό πεζοδρόμησης» — which the act neither numbers nor reproduces, so this is the absence of a published permit rather than proof that no permit exists.

When it operates

Both halves are published in one sentence, and both in plain words: «κατά την περίοδο από 1η Μαΐου έως 30η Σεπτεμβρίου από τις 18:00 το απόγευμα έως 01:00 το βράδυ». From 1 May to 30 September, from 18:00 in the afternoon until 01:00 at night.

No weekday is named, so no weekday is excluded. 🔑 This window is the one shape in this corpus's Greek set that genuinely runs past midnight: «01:00 το βράδυ» — one in the morning — is stated as a night hour rather than as an end-of-day, so the closure covers the first hour of the following calendar day and the schedule encodes it as 18:00→01:00 rather than as 18:00→00:00.

Compare Kalymnos, where «24:00 π.μ.» had to be read as the end of the day, and Megalochori on Santorini, where «12:00 τα μεσάνυχτα» says midnight outright. ⚠️ The act does not say «κάθε έτους» here, but it does not need a reading either: the same decision's clause Γ) and the surrounding text use the identical construction for schemes the municipality has run for years, the signage ordered is permanent with supplementary plates «για την περίοδο και το ωράριο εφαρμογής», and the dates carry no year.

This record treats the season as annual on the same footing as the rest of the clause. ⚠️ What the act does not give is a commencement date: its third condition makes the measures effective from the installation of the signs and never says when that happened, which is why `effective_from` is null.

Area covered

A section of one road, bounded by named sign positions — which is a better-defined extent than any other Greek pedestrianisation in this corpus.

The act regulates «τμήματος της κεντρικής οδού που οδηγεί στη πλατεία από τα δυτικά, βόρεια και ανατολικά», the part of the central road that leads to the square from the west, north and east, and then says in terms that it «οροθετείται από τις θέσεις των πινακίδων 9,10, 3, 4, 5, 6 και 7» — it is bounded by sign positions 9, 10, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. 🔑 The table headed ΠΕΡΙΟΔΙΚΗ ΠΕΖΟΔΡΟΜΗΣΗ ΟΙΚΙΣΜΟΥ ΣΚΑΛΑΣ ΚΑΛΛΟΝΗΣ then prints all eleven positions in ΕΓΣΑ 87 with the sign code at each, and here — unlike the Santorini act — the code and the position ARE printed on the same row, so nothing has to be guessed: positions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 carry «Ρ-7, Ρ-55, Πρ» (position 3 also carries Π-31γ), and positions 1, 2, 8 and 11 carry Π-31γ alone.

That is the closed perimeter signed seven times over, with four wayfinding plates pointing at parking outside it. 🚫 Still not a boundary: eleven points do not close a polygon, the road is never named, and the act carries no drawing.

An inverse transverse-Mercator conversion puts the seven Ρ-55 positions within roughly 200 m of each other around the square — a derived sanity figure computed for this note, appearing nowhere as a published coordinate.

Why there is no map here
The published extent is a prose clause plus eleven surveyed sign positions in the Greek national grid, seven of which the act names as the bounds of the closed length. 🔑 That is the richest published geometry of any Greek pedestrianisation in this corpus — richer than Megalochori's two limits and nineteen unattributed positions, and far richer than Kalymnos's single point — and it is the only one where the act says which positions bound the zone. It is still not a boundary: eleven points do not close a polygon, the road is never named, and no drawing accompanies the item. A visitor is told which settlement, which square and where the signs stand, and must read the signs for the rest.

Petrol standard

This scheme sets no emission threshold, and the absence is structural rather than unrecorded. It is a pedestrianisation under the Greek Highway Code: the test is whether a vehicle may be on the street at all during the closed hours, not what it emits.

Diesel standard

The same as for petrol, and for the same structural reason: the act contains no emission criterion of any kind, and nothing in it turns on fuel, age or engine.

Penalty if you do not comply
€350.00 The act prints no figure at all; every number here is read from the statute, and the Code was read for this cycle on 2026-09-23 rather than inherited. Driving a vehicle on a pedestrian street is prohibited by article 20 §4 of ν. 5209/2025, the Greek Highway Code in force since 13 September 2025, and article 20 §8 β) classifies a breach of §4 in category Ε3-Β and additionally in category Σ. Article 108 §5 γ) γα) prices a category Ε3 breach at «διοικητικό πρόστιμο τριακοσίων πενήντα (350) ευρώ»; §5 γ) γβ) adds withdrawal of the driving licence and of the vehicle's registration documents for thirty days; §5 δ) adds a further forty days' withdrawal of the licence for category Σ. ⚠️ For a visitor in a hire car the measure against the vehicle's papers is a matter between the renter and the rental company that the Code does not address. 🔑 The word and the signs agree here, as at Kalymnos and Megalochori and unlike Mytilene: the clause says «περιοδική πεζοδρόμηση» and the table prints Ρ-55 at every bounding position. ⚠️ The smaller routes belong on the record rather than in a drawer. Failing to obey sign Ρ-55 as a sign is classified by article 7 §11 ζ) in category Ε1-Α and in category Σ — €30 under §5 α) αα) plus forty days' withdrawal of the licence. Sign Ρ-7, «Απαγορεύεται η είσοδος σε όλα τα οχήματα», is classified by article 7 §11 ε) in category Ε2-Β: €150 plus twenty days under §5 β) ββ), and it stands at every one of the seven bounding positions alongside the Ρ-55. Π-31γ is not a prohibition at all; article 7 §4 με) defines it as «Κατεύθυνση προς χώρο επιτρεπόμενης στάθμευσης», direction to a permitted parking area — the act signs the way out as well as the way in. This record publishes the largest figure because a driver should plan for the worst case, and states the others rather than hiding them.Source: Εθνικό Τυπογραφείο, read 2026-09-23

Article 20 §4 and §8 β) for driving on a pedestrian street; article 7 §3 ζ) for Ρ-7 and §4 με) for Π-31γ; article 7 §11 ε) and ζ) for the sign categories; article 108 §5 for the tariff.

How to comply
  • Between 1 May and 30 September, do not drive into the centre of Skala Kallonis after 18:00. The closure runs until 01:00 — past midnight — every day of the week, and it covers the stretch of the central road that leads to the square from the west, the north and the east.
  • Outside those five months the street is an ordinary street at every hour, and inside them it is an ordinary street every morning and afternoon until 18:00.
  • Park outside and walk in, and the signs will help you: four of the eleven positions the act surveys carry Π-31γ, the plate that points towards a permitted parking area. The closed perimeter is the seven positions that carry Ρ-7 and Ρ-55.
  • ⚠️ The last evening of the season spills into October. The period ends on 30 September, but the window that opens that evening runs to 01:00 — so the first hour of 1 October is still inside the last closure of the year. This page's timetable encodes the season by month and will say "not in force" for that hour; the signs on the street are what govern.
  • ⚠️ If the post is bare, the rule has not started yet. The act's third condition makes the measures effective «από την τοποθέτηση των οικείων πινακί-δων σήμανσης, των σηματοδοτών ή των διαγραμμίσεων στο οδόστρωμα» — from the installation of the signs — and gives no date for that.
  • You are admitted if you live or are staying on the closed stretch. Article 4 §56 of the Highway Code defines a πεζόδρομος as a road used exclusively by pedestrians and for vehicles going in and out of parking on properties fronting it. If your accommodation is on that stretch, that is the exemption you are relying on.
  • ⚠️ The cost of getting it wrong is up to €350 plus licence measures — €350, thirty days' withdrawal of the driving licence and of the vehicle's registration documents, and a further forty days for the category Σ classification. The same clause's Ρ-7 signs carry €150 plus twenty days on their own account. `penalty` sets all the routes out.
  • Read the plate under the sign for the authoritative hours. The act orders supplementary informational plates carrying «την περίοδο και το ωράριο εφαρμογής» — the period and the hours — so the street itself carries the same two facts this page does. If the plate says something different, the plate is what an officer reads.
  • There is nothing to buy and nowhere to buy it. No permit, no exemption procedure and no charge appears in the clause — but it does defer to a standing municipal pedestrianisation regulation that it never numbers, so treat that as unread rather than as absent.
