Not in force in Thira right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 12:05 · Europe/Athens

  • Not in force Every vehicle on the section of road that runs through the centre of Megalochori between the two surveyed limits the act prints. The act orders sign Ρ-55, the pedestrian-street sign, which the Greek Highway Code defines as admitting pedestrians and vehicles going in and out of a property on that street; those exemptions cannot be expressed as a timetable and are described in `how_to_comply`.

Starts Tuesday, 13 October 2026 at 17:00 local time.

The window ends at midnight and is encoded as 17:00 to 00:00. The act writes «μεχρι 12:00 τα μεσανυχτα» — until 12:00 at midnight — and an end of 00:00 with an earlier start is how this project encodes a window that closes at the end of the day. Nothing in this rule runs into the following morning.

🚨 The words this timetable encodes cannot be extracted from the gazette file. The season and the clock were taken from the publisher's own search index, which renders them lower-cased and accent-stripped, and no string carrying either can be watched on the PDF — measured on 2026-09-23. If the National Printing House ever reissues this item with different dates, the watched strings on the record would catch the reissue, but they could not catch a change confined to the season or the hours.

🚨 This timetable cannot tell you whether the rule has commenced. The act's third condition makes the measures effective «από την τοποθέτηση των οικείων πινακί-δων σήμανσης» — from the installation of the signs — and gives no date for that, so a verdict of "in force" here means "in force whenever the signs are up", not "in force since a day we know". That is why `effective_from` is null.

This covers one stretch of road in Megalochori and nothing else on Santorini. A verdict of "in force" says that stretch is closed at that moment; it says nothing about Fira, Oia, Pyrgos, Imerovigli, Akrotiri or any other street in the municipality, and this project holds no boundary that could tell a driver which stretch they are on.

The exceptions cannot be seen by a timetable. Vehicles going in and out of a property on the closed stretch are admitted by the Highway Code's own definition of a πεζόδρομος at every hour the rule is in force, so for them the schedule over-warns in every window.

Public holidays are not encoded, because the act does not mention them. It exempts no day, and 15 August — the busiest evening of the Greek summer — falls inside the season. Expect the closure then, not an exemption.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Santorini has one gazetted evening road closure, and this is it. From 15 May to 15 October of every year, between 17:00 and midnight, a stretch of road through the centre of Megalochori — the inland village between Pyrgos and Akrotiri that tour buses and hire cars stop at for its wineries and its square — is a pedestrian street. The rule is Αριθμ.

23995/MOE of the Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Αιγαίου, signed at Piraeus on 3 September 2024 and gazetted on 13 September 2024, approving decision 152/2024 of the municipal council of Δήμος Θήρας. 🔑 It matters to a visitor more than a single village street usually would, because Santorini's road network funnels: Megalochori sits on the spine road between Fira and Akrotiri, its centre is narrow, and the closed hours are exactly the hours a driver heads south for the Akrotiri sunset. ⚠️ The municipality is named Θήρα, not Σαντορίνη — the island's tourist name is not the administrative one, and searching for the rule under «Σαντορίνη» finds nothing. 🚨 **One thing about this record has to be said at the top, because it is unusual in this corpus: the sentence that carries the rule cannot be extracted from the gazette PDF at all.** The season, the clock and the words «περιοδική πεζοδρόμηση» sit in a subset font with no /ToUnicode; they were recovered from the National Printing House's own search index, which returns them lower-cased and accent-stripped.

That text is the publisher's, and it is quoted here as content — but it cannot be watched, and the gazette's own typography for it is not reproduced here because it is not recoverable. What IS extractable from the file, and watched, is the title naming Megalochori and Δήμος Θήρας, the two surveyed limits of the pedestrianisation, the nineteen sign positions, the council decision number, the date and the signer.

Daily charge

Nothing is charged and there is nothing to buy. The act closes a village street for part of the evening during one season; it creates no permit, no registration, no day ticket and no resident scheme, and no figure of any kind appears in it. The only money in this record is the fine in `penalty`, which is read from the Highway Code rather than from the act.

When it operates

Both halves are published — the season and the clock — and unlike the Kalymnos closure of 2026 this act also says in so many words that the season repeats.

The National Printing House's search index returns the operative sentence as «εγκρινουμε την περιοδικη πεζοδρομηση (απο 15η μαιου εως 15η οκτωβριου καθε ετους και απο ωρα 17:00 μ.μ. μεχρι 12:00 τα μεσανυχτα) τμηματος οδου που διερχεται απο το κεντρο του οικισμου μεγαλοχωριου δημου θηρας, με την τοποθετηση καταλληλων κατακορυφων ρυθμιστικων πινακιδων στις θεσεις με ενδεικτικες συντεταγμενες κατα εγσα ’87» — from 15 May to 15 October of each year, and from 17:00 until 12:00 at midnight, for the section of road that passes through the centre of the settlement of Megalochori. 🚨 That quotation is reproduced in the index's own lower-case, accent-stripped rendering on purpose.

It is the publisher's text and it is quoted as content; it is NOT the gazette's spelling, and this project does not have the gazette's spelling for this sentence, because the streams carrying it are a subset font with no character map.

Measured on 2026-09-23 with scripts/check-strings.mjs against the PDF: «15η Μαΐου» [MISS], «Οκτωβρίου κάθε έτους» [MISS], «17:00» [MISS], «μεσάνυχτα» [MISS], «περιοδική πεζοδρόμηση» [MISS], «Εγκρίνουμε» [MISS].

None of it can be watched, and none of it is. 🔑 «καθε ετους» — of every year — is the phrase the Kalymnos act omitted and this one supplies, so the annual reading here is a quotation rather than an inference; this record does not have to reason its way to it. 🔑 «12:00 τα μεσανυχτα» is read as the end of the day: the publisher writes «17:00 μ.μ.» and then «12:00 τα μεσάνυχτα», mixing a twenty-four-hour figure with a twelve-hour one, and naming midnight explicitly in the second so that no reading but the end of the evening is available.

The window is therefore seven hours, 17:00 to 00:00, every day inside the season — no weekday is named, so no weekday is excluded. ⚠️ What the act does not give is a commencement date: its third condition makes the measures effective from the installation of the signs and never says when that happened, which is why `effective_from` is null.

The season and the hours were recovered from the publisher's own search index, which returns a base64 `search_MatchedText` window around a hit; they are not in the text extractable from the PDF.

Area covered

One stretch of one road, described in a clause of prose and pinned by two surveyed points. The act regulates «τμηματος οδου που διερχεται απο το κεντρο του οικισμου μεγαλοχωριου δημου θηρας» — a section of road that passes through the centre of the settlement of Megalochori — and does not name the road.

What it does print, and what this project can read directly out of the file, is a table headed ΟΡΙΟΘΕΤΗΣΗ ΠΕΖΟΔΡΟΜΗΣΗΣ with two rows in the Greek national grid: ΑΡΧΗ 628297 4026271 and ΤΕΛΟΣ 628365 4026619, the beginning and the end of the pedestrianised length.

An inverse transverse-Mercator conversion of those two pairs puts them about 355 m apart in a straight line — a derived sanity figure, computed here for this note and appearing nowhere as a published coordinate. 🔑 A second table, ΣΗΜΕΙΑ ΤΟΠΟΘΕΤΗΣΗΣ ΚΑΤΑΚΟΡΥΦΩΝ ΠΙΝΑΚΙΔΩΝ, prints nineteen numbered sign positions and six sign codes — Ρ-7, Ρ-27, Ρ-28, Ρ-40, Ρ-55 and Π-25. ⚠️ **Which code belongs to which numbered position cannot be read out of this file, and this record does not guess.** The sign column is a merged cell and the extraction emits the six codes interleaved with the nineteen rows in an order that supports more than one grouping; assigning them would be invention.

What can be said, because it is arithmetic on the printed rows rather than a reading of the layout: five of the nineteen positions repeat a coordinate pair that appears earlier in the same table (628296 4026275, 628292 4026275, 628370 4026615, 628363 4026615 and 628077 4026206), which is what a table looks like when one post carries two plates; and two of the repeated pairs sit within a handful of metres of the ΑΡΧΗ and ΤΕΛΟΣ rows, which is where the ends of a pedestrianised length would be signed. 🚫 No polygon, no street list and no drawing reference appears anywhere in the item.

Why there is no map here
The published extent is one prose clause — «τμηματος οδου που διερχεται απο το κεντρο του οικισμου μεγαλοχωριου» — plus two surveyed limits in the Greek national grid (ΑΡΧΗ 628297 4026271, ΤΕΛΟΣ 628365 4026619) and nineteen surveyed sign positions. 🔑 That is the richest published geometry of the five Aegean pedestrianisations in this corpus: Antiparos prints two points per zone, Sifnos one per closure, Kalymnos one for the whole scheme, Mytilene two points four metres apart at a single park gate. It is still not a boundary. Twenty-one points do not close a polygon, the act never names the road they lie on, and the drawings that would show the length are not in the gazette. A visitor is told which village and which end-points, and must read the signs for the rest.

The authority's own map: Αποκεντρωμένη Διοίκηση Αιγαίου / Δήμος Θήρας, Διεύθυνση Τεχνικών Υπηρεσιών…

Petrol standard

This scheme sets no emission threshold, and the absence is structural rather than unrecorded. It is a pedestrianisation under the Greek Highway Code: the test is whether a vehicle may be on the street at all during the closed hours, not what it emits. A Euro 6 car and a 1990 diesel are treated identically here.

Diesel standard

The same as for petrol, and for the same structural reason: the act contains no emission criterion of any kind, and nothing in it turns on fuel, age or engine.

Penalty if you do not comply
€350.00 The act prints no figure at all; every number here is read from the statute, and the Code was read for this record on 2026-09-23 rather than inherited from the corpus's other Greek entries. Driving a vehicle on a pedestrian street is prohibited by article 20 §4 of ν. 5209/2025, the Greek Highway Code in force since 13 September 2025 — «Ο οδηγός απαγορεύεται να κυκλοφορεί ... καθώς και σε πλατείες, πεζόδρομους, πεζοδρόμια» — and article 20 §8 β) classifies a breach of §4 in category Ε3-Β and additionally in category Σ. Article 108 §5 γ) γα) prices a category Ε3 breach at «διοικητικό πρόστιμο τριακοσίων πενήντα (350) ευρώ»; §5 γ) γβ) adds withdrawal of the driving licence and of the vehicle's registration documents for thirty days; §5 δ) adds a further forty days' withdrawal of the licence for the category Σ classification. ⚠️ The money is the smaller half of the consequence, and for a visitor in a hire car the measure against the vehicle's papers is a matter between the renter and the rental company that the Code does not address. 🔑 Unlike the Mytilene scheme in this corpus, the word and the sign agree here. Mytilene is called a πεζοδρόμηση but prints only Ρ-19, which is a different and cheaper offence; this act prints Ρ-55 itself among the six codes in its sign table, and article 4 §56 of the Code defines a πεζόδρομος as a road used exclusively by pedestrians and for vehicles entering and leaving parking on adjacent properties. So the €350 route and the signs on the ground point the same way. ⚠️ Two smaller figures belong on the record rather than in a drawer, because the same act orders the signs that carry them. Failing to obey sign Ρ-55 as a sign is classified by article 7 §11 ζ) in category Ε1-Α and in category Σ — €30 under §5 α) αα) plus forty days' withdrawal of the licence — which is a much smaller fine with a much longer licence measure than the §20 route, and nothing this project holds says which of the two an officer on Santorini writes. Sign Ρ-7, «Απαγορεύεται η είσοδος σε όλα τα οχήματα», is classified by article 7 §11 ε) in category Ε2-Β: €150 plus twenty days under §5 β) ββ). Ρ-27 and Ρ-28 — no left turn and no right turn — are in the same Ε2-Β list. Ρ-40, the stopping and parking prohibition, is in the Ε1-Β list of article 7 §11 δ): €30 plus ten days. Π-25 is not a prohibition at all; article 7 §4 λγ) defines it as «Οδός αδιέξοδος», a dead-end road. This record publishes the largest of these because a driver should plan for the worst case, and states the others rather than hiding them.Source: Εθνικό Τυπογραφείο, read 2026-09-23

Article 20 §4 and §8 β) for driving on a pedestrian street; article 7 §3 ζ) for what sign Ρ-7 means, §3 κζ) and κη) for Ρ-27 and Ρ-28, §4 λγ) for Π-25; article 7 §11 δ), ε) and ζ) for the sign categories; article 108 §5 for the tariff.

How to comply
  • Between 15 May and 15 October, do not drive through the centre of Megalochori after 17:00. The closure runs from 17:00 until midnight, every day of the week, and it covers the stretch of road that passes through the village centre — the one you would be on if you were driving between the main road and the square.
  • Outside those five months the street is an ordinary street at every hour, and inside them it is an ordinary street every morning and afternoon until 17:00. There is no daytime restriction here at all.
  • Park outside the village and walk in. Megalochori is small, the regulated length is a few hundred metres, and the act's whole purpose is to give the evening in the village centre to people on foot — which is also the time the tavernas and wine bars on it are open.
  • ⚠️ If you are driving south from Fira towards Akrotiri in the evening, plan the detour before you reach the village rather than at its edge. The closed hours start at 17:00, which is before rather than after the Akrotiri sunset traffic, and the spine road through the village is the direct route.
  • ⚠️ If the post is bare, the rule has not started yet. The act's third condition makes the measures effective «από την τοποθέτηση των οικείων πινακί-δων σήμανσης, των σηματοδοτών ή των διαγραμμίσεων στο οδόστρωμα» — from the installation of the signs — and gives no date for that. It was gazetted on 13 September 2024, near the end of the season it regulates.
  • You are admitted if you live or are staying on the closed stretch. Article 4 §56 of the Highway Code defines a πεζόδρομος as a road used exclusively by pedestrians and for vehicles going in and out of parking on properties fronting it. If your accommodation is on that stretch, that is the exemption you are relying on, and the Code rather than this act is what grants it.
  • ⚠️ The cost of getting it wrong is up to €350 plus licence measures. Driving along a pedestrian street is a category Ε3-Β breach of the Greek Highway Code: €350, thirty days' withdrawal of the driving licence and of the vehicle's registration documents, and a further forty days for the category Σ classification. The same act's other signs carry smaller figures — €150 for Ρ-7, €30 for Ρ-40 — and `penalty` sets all of them out.
  • ⚠️ Six sign codes are ordered and nineteen positions are surveyed, but the act does not say which code stands where. That is stated rather than guessed on this record. Treat any unsigned approach onto the closed stretch as unresolved rather than as permitted.
  • 🚨 The words of the rule are not readable in the gazette file, and you should know that before you rely on this page. The season and the hours on it come from the National Printing House's own search index, not from the extractable text of the PDF, because the streams carrying that sentence use a font with no character map. The index is the publisher's, so the facts are the publisher's — but if a sign in Megalochori says something different from this page, the sign is what an officer reads.
  • ⚠️ The municipality's own website will not confirm any of this. thira.gov.gr is the Δήμος Θήρας site and is open to read, but its site search returns nothing for «πεζοδρόμηση» and nothing for «κυκλοφοριακ», measured on 2026-09-23. This record rests on the national gazette and on the Highway Code.
  • There is nothing to buy and nowhere to buy it. No permit, no exemption procedure and no charge appears anywhere in the act.
