Driving in Gothenburg: Congestion charge

Gothenburg, Sweden · Congestion charge

Official name Trängselskatt Göteborg (congestion tax)

In force in Gothenburg right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 11:05 · Europe/Stockholm

Lifts Tuesday, 13 October 2026 at 18:30 local time.

The source states the last charged passage as 18:29, so the window is written as ending at 18:30.

The exempt days come from the Agency's own Gothenburg list, which it publishes one year at a time. Outside the year it has published, this treats every weekday as charged.

This says only whether a passage is charged at that time. The amount varies by half-hour band — see the operating times above — and the single-charge rule means several passages within an hour cost only the highest of them.

Backa is not modelled. Inside that district only through traffic is taxed, and whether a particular journey counts as through traffic depends on which control points it crosses, which this schedule cannot know.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Gothenburg charges a congestion tax on vehicles driving into and out of the city centre. There is nothing to buy: cameras register each passage at 37 numbered toll stations and you are billed afterwards. What you pay depends on the time of day, from 9 SEK off-peak to 22 SEK at the two peaks, and at most 60 SEK per vehicle per day.

The tax applies to vehicles registered outside Sweden too.

Daily charge

There is no single daily charge. The tax is charged per passage and varies by time of day — 9 SEK in the middle of the day, 16 SEK on the shoulders and 22 SEK at the two peaks — with a cap of 60 SEK per vehicle per day. The per-passage schedule is given under hours; a single 'daily charge' figure would misrepresent what a driver actually pays.

When it operates

Charged on weekdays between 06:00 and 18:29, per passage: 06:00–06:29 9 SEK; 06:30–06:59 16 SEK; 07:00–07:59 22 SEK; 08:00–08:29 16 SEK; 08:30–14:59 9 SEK; 15:00–15:29 16 SEK; 15:30–16:59 22 SEK; 17:00–17:59 16 SEK; 18:00–18:29 9 SEK; 18:30–05:59 nothing. A single-charge rule applies: a vehicle passing several toll stations within 60 minutes is taxed once, at the highest of those amounts.

No tax is charged on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, days before a public holiday, or at any point during July.

Area covered

Vehicles driving into and out of Gothenburg city centre. The cordon is made of 37 numbered toll stations, from Fridkullagatan and Gibraltargatan in the south-east round to Södra Tagenevägen and Skälltorpsvägen in the north and the E6/E20 Kungsbackaleden in the south; the Älvsborg bridge, the Tingstad and Marieholm tunnels and the Oscarsleden are all on it.

Within the Backa district only through traffic is taxed, which the Agency enforces with five separate control points rather than toll stations.

Why there is no map here
There is no boundary to draw. The congestion tax is charged for passing one of 37 toll points, not for being inside an area, so an outline would misrepresent how the scheme works. Coordinates for the toll points do exist, but only through Trafikverket's Lastkajen service, which requires an account — and we do not create accounts or accept terms on the project's behalf.
Petrol standard

Not applicable: Gothenburg's congestion tax is a time-and-place charge, not an emissions rule. Sweden's emission-based zones (miljözoner) are a separate scheme under the trafikförordning, and Gothenburg's class 1 miljözon applies only to heavy lorries and buses. Neither is covered by this record.

Diesel standard

Not applicable: see the note on the petrol standard.

How to comply
  • There is nothing to buy in advance and no barrier to stop at. Passages are registered automatically at the toll stations and you are billed afterwards.
  • For a vehicle registered abroad, the Swedish Transport Agency uses a notification partner that identifies the owner, sends the invoice and takes payment via EPASS24.
  • For a vehicle registered in Sweden, payment is by direct debit (autogiro), electronic invoice (e-faktura) or payment slip.
  • Cars, lorries and buses are liable. Emergency vehicles, EC mobile cranes, buses of at least 14 tonnes, motorbikes and mopeds are not.
  • If the tax is not paid on time a surcharge of 500 SEK is added, at most once per car per calendar month.
