3 schemes in 2 cities. Every figure comes from an official source and is re-checked.
Sweden has 3 driving restrictions that we have checked against an official source, in 2 cities. They are 2 congestion charges and 1 low emission zone.
This page lists no country-wide requirement for Sweden. Anything owed before you reach a city is not covered here, so check the national road authority before you leave.
The sources for this country were read between 2026-09-02 and 2026-09-12, from the authorities' own pages. Each check is repeated on a schedule, and a rule we can no longer confirm comes down instead of staying up.
| Scheme | City | Kind | Fine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trängselskatt Göteborg (congestion tax) | Gothenburg | Congestion charge | 500.00 SEK |

Gothenburg charges a congestion tax on vehicles driving into and out of the city centre. There is nothing to buy: cameras register each passage at 37 numbered toll stations and you are billed afterwards. What you pay depends on the time of day, from 9 SEK off-peak to 22 SEK at the two peaks, and at most 60 SEK per vehicle per day.
The tax applies to vehicles registered outside Sweden too.
Penalty 500.00 SEK
Stockholm charges a congestion tax on vehicles driving into and out of the city centre and on the Essingeleden motorway. You are not buying a ticket: cameras register each passage automatically and you are billed. What you pay depends on the time of day and the season — at most 135 SEK per vehicle per day in peak season and 105 SEK off-peak.
The tax applies to vehicles registered outside Sweden too.
Penalty 500.00 SEK
This is the only place in Sweden where an emission zone reaches a private car. Sweden has three classes of miljözon and the classes are defined nationally, but each one has to be switched on street by street by the municipality — and only Stockholm has ever switched on class 2. It is one street: most of Hornsgatan on Södermalm.
A petrol, ethanol or gas car must be at least Euro 5 and a diesel must be Euro 6, which in practice means first registered from September 2011 and September 2015 respectively. There is nothing to pay and nothing to register; a car that does not meet the standard simply may not drive along that stretch. Crossing Hornsgatan is allowed for everyone.
