Driving in Bradford: Bradford Clean Air Zone (Class C+)

Bradford, United Kingdom · Low emission zone

In force in Bradford right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 10:04 · Europe/London

The zone runs continuously; whether you pay depends on what you drive, which this does not check. A car and a motorbike are outside the charge at every hour.

The boundary we hold includes the outer ring road itself, because the council states the red line is inside the zone. Unlike Birmingham's A4540 or Edinburgh's ring, this ring road is not a way round.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Bradford's is the largest Clean Air Zone in England — 9.35 square miles by the national register, reaching out of the city centre along the Aire valley to Shipley and Saltaire — and it does not charge cars.

The council calls it a Class C+ zone: passenger cars and motorbikes are not charged even when used for work, while a non-compliant hackney carriage or private hire vehicle pays £7 a day, a non-compliant van, light goods vehicle or minibus £9, and a non-compliant HGV, bus or coach £50. Campervans, motorhomes and car-derived vans are charged like vans, whether the journey is for work or for fun.

Daily charge

There is no charge for a car or a motorbike in Bradford, and the council says so in as many words — "Cars and motorbikes don't have to pay in Bradford—even if you use them for work" — so this blank is the scheme's, not ours.

The zone does charge other vehicles, and at three different rates: £7 a day for a non-compliant hackney carriage or private hire vehicle, £9 for a non-compliant minibus or light goods vehicle, and £50 for a non-compliant HGV, bus or coach. Campervans, motorhomes and car-derived vans count as light goods vehicles here, not as cars.

When it operates

A charging day means midnight to midnight. You can go in and out of the zone as many times as you like in one day and pay only once, but driving in the zone before and after midnight is two days and two charges.

Area covered

The zone covers the area inside, and including, the Bradford outer ring road — the ring road itself is in the zone, not a way round it. It also extends out along the Aire valley corridor, through Manningham Lane, Bradford Road and the Canal Road area, to take in Shipley and Saltaire.

Petrol standard

Euro 4 petrol or newer is compliant for vans, light goods vehicles and minibuses. Taxis and private hire vehicles have their own table rather than one standard: a Euro 5 or 6 petrol hybrid or Euro 5 petrol/LPG clears a four-seat private hire vehicle, while a larger private hire vehicle, a wheelchair-accessible one or a hackney carriage clears at Euro 4 petrol.

Diesel standard

Euro 6 diesel or newer, including alternative fuels, is compliant for HGVs, buses and coaches, and Euro 6 diesel is the standard for vans, light goods vehicles, minibuses, taxis and private hire vehicles as well. An older diesel in any of those classes is charged; an older diesel car is not charged at all.

Penalty if you do not comply
£120.00Source: City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, read 2026-09-11
How to comply
  • If you drive a car or a motorbike, there is nothing to pay and nothing to register — even if the journey is for work. The council makes that point twice, and adds the warning that other cities do charge cars, so check before you go somewhere else.
  • If you drive a chargeable vehicle, pay on the government's central service: 6 days before, on the day, or up to 6 days after. Nothing will remind you.
  • The fine is £120, halved to £60 if you pay within 14 days — and the discount is on the penalty only. The original daily charge of £7, £9 or £50 is still owed on top.
  • You have 28 days. If you neither pay nor appeal, the council issues a Charge Certificate that raises the fine by 50%, and can then go to a court order and to bailiffs.
  • A campervan, motorhome or car-derived van is treated as a light goods vehicle here, not as a car — that is the vehicle class most likely to be assumed exempt and charged anyway.
  • A non-UK registered vehicle is not outside the scheme: the council states it will enforce charges and penalties for non-UK vehicles.
