Driving in Edinburgh

United Kingdom: 1 scheme to know about before you drive in.

The short answer for Edinburgh

Edinburgh has one driving restriction on our books: the Edinburgh Low Emission Zone. What is a low emission zone?

What it means for your car

Petrol or LPG. Euro 4 or better for petrol cars and vans. The statutory standard is set nationally, not by the council: regulation 2 of the Low Emission Zones (Emission Standards, Exemptions and Enforcement) (Scotland) Regulations 2021 sets the euro 4 standard for positive ignition engine vehicles. Fully zero emission vehicles, including electric cars, meet the standard.
Diesel. Euro 6 or better for diesel cars and vans; Euro VI for buses, coaches and HGVs. The statutory standard is national: regulation 2 of the Low Emission Zones (Emission Standards, Exemptions and Enforcement) (Scotland) Regulations 2021 sets the euro 6 standard for compression ignition engine vehicles. Taxis and private hire cars are held to Euro 6 for both fuels under the council's own licence conditions.
