Driving in Glasgow

United Kingdom: 1 scheme to know about before you drive in.

The short answer for Glasgow

Glasgow has one driving restriction on our books: the Glasgow's Low Emission Zone. What is a low emission zone?

What it means for your car

Petrol or LPG. Euro 4 or better for a petrol vehicle — a positive ignition engine in the regulations' language, generally a car or van registered from 2006 onwards. The standard is national: regulation 2 of the Low Emission Zones (Emission Standards, Exemptions and Enforcement) (Scotland) Regulations 2021 sets it by reference to "Table 1 in schedule 2 (euro 4 standards for positive ignition engine vehicles)", and it is the same in all four Scottish zones. Glasgow's council did not set it and cannot vary it.
Diesel. Euro 6 or better for a diesel vehicle — a compression ignition engine in the regulations' language, generally a car or van registered from September 2015 onwards, and Euro VI for buses, coaches and HGVs. The standard is national: regulation 2 of the Low Emission Zones (Emission Standards, Exemptions and Enforcement) (Scotland) Regulations 2021 sets it by reference to "Table 1 in schedule 1 (euro 6 standards for compression ignition engine vehicles)", and it is the same in all four Scottish zones.
