Driving in Marseille

France: 1 scheme to know about before you drive in.

The short answer for Marseille

Marseille has one driving restriction on our books: the Zone à Faibles Émissions mobilité (ZFE-m) de Marseille (low emission zone). What is a low emission zone?

What it means for your car

Petrol or LPG. A petrol car is only caught if it is Crit'Air 5 or unclassified — in practice first registered before 1997, since petrol from 1997 to 2005 is Crit'Air 3 and is not banned here. Crit'Air 4 has no petrol car in it at all: the class covers diesel cars registered up to 31 December 2005. This is the mildest petrol threshold of any French zone in this corpus, and it is mild because the class 3 step was cancelled, not because Marseille started later.
Diesel. A diesel car first registered up to 31 December 2005 is banned, because that is Crit'Air 4 or worse. A diesel car from 1 January 2006 onwards is Crit'Air 3 or better and is allowed — and that is the whole difference between Marseille and the rest of France, because order n° 24-177 of 11 June 2024 deleted the clause that would have barred class 3 from 1 September 2024 and replaced it with a postponement carrying no date. For heavy goods vehicles the Crit'Air 4 line falls at diesel first registered up to 30 September 2009.
