Driving in Formigine: Low emission zone

Formigine, Italy · Low emission zone

Partly in force in Formigine right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 11:04 · Europe/Rome

  • In force Monday to Friday, 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027: petrol, LPG/petrol and methane/petrol up to Euro 2; diesel up to Euro 4; mopeds and motorcycles up to Euro 2. 🚫 There is no dual-fuel diesel line in this order at all, on any of its three lists.
  • Not in force The nineteen named ecological Sundays: petrol, LPG/petrol and methane/petrol up to Euro 2; diesel up to Euro 5; mopeds and motorcycles up to Euro 2 — the same five lines as the weekday rule, with the diesel threshold one class higher

Lifts Tuesday, 13 October 2026 at 18:30 local time.

🚨 The Sunday rule is a list of dates here and a rule elsewhere, and that is the single most transferable error in this corner of the corpus. Point 3 names nineteen Sundays and none of them is in December; Castenaso's order for the same season names twenty-three including all four December Sundays; Maranello's declares every Sunday of the season an ecological Sunday and names none; Piacenza's names twenty with December empty. No timetable may be copied from one town to another.

The Sunday rule bans the same five vehicle lines as the weekday rule and differs only in the diesel threshold, which reaches Euro 5. ⚠️ That is NOT the Castenaso shape, where the Sunday list also silently drops a line the weekday list bans. A reader who has learned that trap should not go looking for it here.

Saturday carries no rule because the order never names Saturday in its circulation articles. That holds only while the emergency measures are off.

The emergency measures are not in this timetable and cannot be. Arpae issues the bulletin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; when it calls for measures anywhere in the Province of Modena the ban runs 08:00–19:00 from the following day until the next control day inclusive, on any day of the week, on the same five lines as the ecological Sundays.

Strike days are not in this timetable for the same reason: the order suspends the ban on any day of a local public transport strike, and those are called at short notice.

⚠️ This timetable is a clock. It says nothing about where you are, and here the where is drawn in words: the ban covers the centro abitato of Formigine, and the eleven roads that bound it stay open, as do the approaches to the park-and-ride car parks. A vehicle on the banned list can be entirely lawful at every hour in this table.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Formigine closes the built-up area at its centre to older vehicles for the winter half of the year, from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 18:30, the ban catches petrol cars up to and including Euro 2, LPG/petrol and methane/petrol up to and including Euro 2, diesel cars up to and including Euro 4, and mopeds and motorcycles up to and including Euro 2.

Nothing is on sale: there is no day ticket, no charge and no payable derogation. The fine is set by national law and the order states it, a range of €168 to €678, with fifteen to thirty days' licence suspension for a repeat offence within two years. 🔑 THE BOUNDARY IS WRITTEN OUT AS A RING OF ROADS THAT STAY OPEN, AND THAT IS UNUSUAL IN THIS CORNER OF THE CORPUS.

Point 9 names eleven perimeter roads and says of them, in as many words, "è delimitata dalle seguenti vie, che risultano percorribili" — the area is bounded by the following roads, which remain passable. Via Gatti, Via Giardini Sud, Via Achille Grandi, Via Sassuolo, Via Ferrari, Via Radici, Via Pascoli, Via Rivi, Via Giardini Nord, Via Sant'Onofrio and Via Sant'Antonio, most of them cut at a named junction.

A banned vehicle may drive the edge; it may not cross into the middle. The access routes to the park-and-ride car parks are excluded from the ban as well. 🚨 THE SUNDAYS ARE NAMED DATES AND DECEMBER HAS NONE.

The order lists nineteen ecological Sundays. Counted against the calendar on 2026-09-29, the season holds twenty-six Sundays, so seven are not on the list — and four of those seven are every Sunday in December.

On an ecological Sunday the vehicle list is the same five lines but diesel reaches Euro 5, so a Euro 5 diesel is legal here on a Tuesday and banned on 18 October. ⚠️ Move-In, the regional telematics scheme, is narrow here: the order excludes enrolled vehicles from point 1 only — "solo relativamente alle limitazioni strutturali di cui al punto 1" — so a Move-In vehicle is still banned on the nineteen ecological Sundays and during the emergency measures.

Electric and hybrid vehicles, cars carrying at least three people, and vehicles registered for specific transport or special uses are outside the ban altogether.

Comune di Formigine (MO) — Ordinanza n. 277 del 28/09/2026, signed digitally by the Mayor, Elisa Parenti, and published by Arpae Emilia-Romagna, the regional agency that collects the implementing ordinances of the municipalities bound by the PAIR 2030

Daily charge

Nothing is charged and nothing is on sale. The order bans the listed classes from circulating inside a delimited built-up area, leaves its perimeter roads and the park-and-ride approaches open, and then lists the vehicles and journeys that are exempt; there is no day ticket, no registration fee and no payable derogation a visitor could buy.

The one route by which a banned vehicle can be authorised is Move-In, the regional telematics scheme, which fits a black box and allows a monitored annual mileage allowance instead of a flat prohibition, on the terms of Annexes A, B and C to regional decision DGR n. 1493 of 22/09/2025 as applied here by the Comune's own earlier ordinanza sindacale n. 311 of 30/09/2025. 🚨 Its reach is the narrow one.

Point 10 letter d) excludes Move-In vehicles "solo relativamente alle limitazioni strutturali di cui al punto 1" — only in respect of the structural limitations of point 1, which is the Monday-to-Friday ban.

The 2025 ordinance that admitted Move-In said the same thing from the other side and said it twice, undertaking "non applicare la disposizione di cui al punto precedente durante le domeniche ecologiche … e in caso di attivazione delle eventuali limitazioni emergenziali".

So an enrolled vehicle is still banned on the nineteen ecological Sundays and while the emergency measures are running. ⚠️ Maranello's order for the same season does the opposite and excludes Move-In vehicles from points 1, 3 and 8.1 alike; Castenaso's is worded as this one is; Piacenza's says they "restano soggetti". Five orders, one regional plan, and no two reaches that can be read off one another.

Move-In is in any case a scheme for vehicles registered in the participating regions rather than something a foreign visitor can buy on arrival, and neither the order nor the regional decision states a price in the documents read here, so none is given.

When it operates

Seasonal, and the season had not yet begun when this was read. The ban runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 — the order puts the dates in its own subject line, "IN VIGORE DAL 01/10/2026 AL 31/03/2027".

Monday to Friday the window is 08:30 to 18:30. 🚨 THE SUNDAYS ARE NAMED DATES, NOT A RULE, AND THERE ARE NINETEEN OF THEM: 4, 11, 18 and 25 October 2026; 8, 15, 22 and 29 November 2026; 10, 17, 24 and 31 January 2027; 7, 14, 21 and 28 February 2027; and 7, 14 and 21 March 2027. Each runs 08:30 to 18:30 on a list that reaches diesel Euro 5. ⚠️ That is not every Sunday of the season.

Counted on 2026-09-29, the season holds twenty-six Sundays and seven are absent: 1 November 2026, all four Sundays in December — 6, 13, 20 and 27 December 2026 — 3 January 2027, and 28 March 2027. 🔑 The empty December is a shape this corpus has seen before and it is not universal: Piacenza's order for the same season also names no December Sunday, while Castenaso's names all four and Maranello's declares every Sunday of the season an ecological Sunday without naming any.

On the seven unnamed Sundays there is no ban at all, because the weekday rule does not reach Sunday and the Sunday rule names dates. Saturday carries no ordinary ban; the order never names it.

The weekday ban is suspended on eight named days — 1 November 2026, 8, 25 and 26 December 2026, 1 and 6 January 2027, and 28 and 29 March 2027 — and on any day when local public transport is on strike. ⚠️ Three of those eight cannot do anything, and that is worth stating because it is the kind of clause a reader treats as a right.

1 November 2026 and 28 March 2027 are Sundays and 26 December 2026 is a Saturday, and the rule they suspend applies Monday to Friday. The five that bite are 8 December (Tuesday), 25 December (Friday), 1 January (Friday), 6 January (Wednesday) and 29 March 2027 (Monday). 🔑 29 March 2027 is Easter Monday, and Formigine suspends it where Castenaso and Maranello do not.

Separately, the region's emergency measures can be triggered on any day of the week: they run 08:00 to 19:00 on the same list that the ecological Sundays use, they start the day after Arpae's bulletin and last until the next control day inclusive, and Arpae issues that bulletin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. 🔑 The trigger here is measured across the Province of Modena — the order requires the bulletin to indicate the need for measures "nell'ambito territoriale della Provincia di Modena", not in Formigine itself, and not in a metropolitan city, which is the tier the Castenaso order names.

Comune di Formigine (MO) — Ordinanza n. 277 del 28/09/2026: the subject line, and points 1, 2, 3 and 8

Area covered

One built-up area — "l'area del centro abitato di Formigine" — and the order draws its edge in words rather than leaving it to a sign. 🔑 POINT 9 IS A PERIMETER, AND IT SAYS THE PERIMETER IS OPEN.

"L'area del centro abitato del Comune di Formigine in cui si applica il divieto di circolazione di cui ai punti 1, 3 e 8.1 della presente Ordinanza è individuata nella planimetria costituente l'allegato A ed è delimitata dalle seguenti vie, che risultano percorribili".

Eleven entries follow, most of them cut at a named junction: Via Gatti; Via Giardini Sud from the Via Gatti / Via Quattro Passi roundabout to Via Achille Grandi; Via Achille Grandi as far as Piazza Roma; Via Sassuolo from Via Achille Grandi southwards to Via Costrignano; Via Ferrari from Via Sassuolo to Via Radici; Via Radici from Via Ferrari to Via Pascoli; Via Pascoli from Via Radici to Via Monteverdi; Via Rivi; Via Giardini Nord from the Via Rivi / Via della Resistenza junction towards Casinalbo; Via Sant'Onofrio from Via Lazio towards Casinalbo; and Via Sant'Antonio from the rugby-ground car park towards Colombaro.

A banned vehicle may drive those roads. It may not cross into what they enclose. The order then adds that the access and exit routes to the park-and-ride car parks, shown on the same annex, are excluded from the ban too. 🚨 AND THE ANNEX THAT WOULD SHOW IT IS NOT PUBLISHED, WHICH WAS MEASURED RATHER THAN ASSUMED.

The order names its map as "la planimetria costituente l'allegato A". Arpae's page for Formigine carries a link labelled "Allegato A - Ordinanza del Comune di Formigine (MO)", and on 2026-09-29 that link served the ordinance itself: 147 985 bytes, sha256 489e9020…598f, byte for byte the same file as the main ordinance link. The ordinance PDF contains exactly one image object, 113 × 118 pixels — the municipal crest.

"Allegato B", which is published and is a different file, turns out to be the Highway Code's list of special-purpose vehicle bodies, not a map. So there is no plan to read, and the words above are the whole of what the publisher says about the edge. ✅ THE ROADS ARE ON THE MAP, AND FIFTEEN OF THEM ANSWER TO A FULLER NAME THAN THE ORDER USES.

Measured on OpenStreetMap through the Overpass API on 2026-09-29 over the box (44.540, 10.800, 44.605, 10.905): Via Gatti, Via Achille Grandi, Via Sassuolo, Via Costrignano, Via Ferrari, Via Monteverdi, Via Sant'Onofrio, Via Sant'Antonio, Via Lazio and Via Giardini Nord all exist under exactly the name the order prints.

Five more exist under a longer one — the order's Via Giardini Sud is mapped "Via Giardini sud", its Via Radici is "Via Radici in Piano", its Via Pascoli is "Via Giovanni Pascoli", its Via Rivi is "Via Beato Rolando Rivi", and its Via della Resistenza is mapped as a viale, not a via.

Piazza Roma is three ways around 44.5693/10.8397. 🚫 ONE NAME IS NOT THERE AT ALL: Via Quattro Passi, which the order uses to identify the roundabout at the south-western corner, returns nothing anywhere in a box spanning 44.50–44.68 by 10.70–11.00. The roundabout's other arm, Via Gatti, is mapped, so the corner can still be found; the name the order chose for it cannot. ⚠️ THIS RECORD DOES NOT DRAW THE RING.

Eleven roads, several of them cut at a junction, describe an edge to a reader who is standing on it; they are not a polygon, and closing them into one would be this project's line deciding whether a visitor's older car is committing an offence.

The practical test on the ground is the one the Highway Code gives: a centro abitato is bounded on its approach roads by the begin and end signs bearing the place name. ⚠️ One slip in point 9 is the publisher's and is quoted as it stands: the last entry reads "Via Sant'Antonio dall'intersezione con il Parcheggio campo da Rugby) in direzione Colombaro", with a closing bracket that never opened.

Comune di Formigine (MO) — Ordinanza n. 277 del 28/09/2026, point 9 in full, and points 1, 3 and 8.1 for the phrase the perimeter delimits. The OpenStreetMap measurements are attributed separately under the sources list

Why there is no map here
The order names its own map and the publisher's link for it serves the order again. That was measured, not inferred. Point 9 states that the restricted area "è individuata nella planimetria costituente l'allegato A"; Arpae's page for Formigine carries a link labelled "Allegato A - Ordinanza del Comune di Formigine (MO)"; and on 2026-09-29 that link returned HTTP 200 and 147 985 bytes with sha256 489e90202d9f08dedc1c4c29e40b73f38b868791695671874f4d8222ed55598f — byte for byte the same file as the ordinance link beside it. There is no third file. The ordinance PDF itself contains exactly one image object, 113 × 118 pixels, which is the municipal crest; scripts/pdf-images.py finds nothing else in eleven pages. "Allegato B" IS a separate file and is not a map: it is the Highway Code's schedule of special-purpose vehicle bodies, cited by point 10 letter c). 🔑 This is a different failure from the one recorded at Castenaso three days earlier, where the order pointed at a third party's interactive map and that third party had decommissioned the service. Here nothing external is broken: the publisher attached the wrong file to its own annex link. ✅ AND UNLIKE CASTENASO, THE ORDER STILL DRAWS ITS EDGE IN WORDS. Point 9 names eleven perimeter roads and declares them passable, most of them cut at a named junction, which is a boundary description a driver standing on one of them can use. It is recorded in the area field and is deliberately NOT turned into geometry: eleven part-roads describe an edge, they do not close a polygon, and closing them would be this project's line deciding whether a visitor's older car is committing an offence. 🚫 Nor would the comune serve as a stand-in. relation/43283, "Formigine", stitches to a single closed ring of 47.201 km² spanning 10.08 km by 10.92 km, against a centro abitato the perimeter roads enclose in a fraction of that; a third party's municipal shape is a drawing of a different question. Formigine is warned from its city anchor instead, and the practical test on the ground is the one the Highway Code gives: a centro abitato is bounded on its approach roads by the begin and end signs bearing the place name.

The authority's own map: Comune di Formigine (MO), published by Arpae Emilia-Romagna

Petrol standard

Petrol cars of Euro 0, Euro 1 and Euro 2 are banned — "veicoli alimentati a benzina EURO 0, EURO 1 ed EURO 2, non conformi alla direttiva 98/69/A CE e successive o alla direttiva 99/96/A CE e successive" — so a petrol car needs to be Euro 3 or better. Bi-fuel vehicles running on LPG/petrol or methane/petrol are treated identically and banned up to and including Euro 2.

Mopeds are banned up to and including Euro 2 where they do not comply with Directive 2013/60/EC or later, and motorcycles up to and including Euro 2 where they do not comply with Directive 2003/77/EC or later. None of these four lines moves anywhere in the scheme: they are caught at Euro 2 on weekdays, on the nineteen ecological Sundays and while the emergency measures are running alike.

It is only the diesel line that moves. ⚠️ One transcription note, because it is the publisher's and not ours, and because the identical slip appears in Castenaso's order for the same season: in the emergency list at point 8.1 the second line is printed "veicoli alimentati a GPL/benzina o metano/benzina 0, EURO 1 ed EURO 2", with the word EURO missing before the first 0.

The same line is complete at points 1 and 3, so the class is not in doubt. 🔑 Two comuni in two different provinces reproducing the same missing word is evidence that both orders are editions of one regional template, which is also why their differences — the Sunday calendars, the Move-In reach, the emergency tier — are worth reading as choices rather than accidents.

Comune di Formigine (MO) — Ordinanza n. 277 del 28/09/2026, point 1 for the weekday list, point 3 for the ecological Sundays and point 8.1 for the emergency list

Diesel standard

Diesel cars are banned up to and including Euro 4 from Monday to Friday — "veicoli diesel EURO 0, EURO 1, EURO 2, EURO 3 ed EURO 4 non conformi alla direttiva 2005/55/CE B2 e successive o alla direttiva 99/96 fase III oppure Riga B2 o C e successive" — so a diesel needs to be Euro 5 or better on a weekday. 🚨 On each of the nineteen named ecological Sundays the line moves one class further and Euro 5 is banned as well: point 3 lists "veicoli diesel EURO 0, EURO 1, EURO 2, EURO 3, EURO 4 ed EURO 5 non conformi al regolamento 715/2007*692/2008 (Euro 6 A o Euro 6 B)".

So a Euro 5 diesel is legal here on a Tuesday and banned on 18 October, and only a Euro 6 diesel is clear of every list. The emergency list at point 8.1 uses the same five lines as the Sunday list, so it reaches Euro 5 too. 🔑 THE THREE LISTS DIFFER ONLY IN THIS ONE LINE, AND THAT IS ITSELF THE FINDING.

Castenaso's order for the same season, one day older and built from the same template, has three lists of six, five and seven lines whose membership changes as well as their thresholds — its weekday list bans LPG/diesel and methane/diesel and its Sunday list silently drops them.

Formigine has no dual-fuel diesel line anywhere: five lines on a weekday, the same five on a Sunday, the same five in an emergency, with the diesel threshold the only thing that moves.

A reader who has learned the Castenaso shape would go looking for a trap here and there is none. 🚫 Which is also why nothing is carried across: a methane/diesel vehicle is simply not addressed by this order. ⚠️ A reader who has seen that Italian national law set a structural Euro 5 diesel limitation from 1 October 2026 should note that it does not reach Formigine, and not for the reason they might assume: the national duty in Legge n.

105 of 18 July 2025 is aimed at municipalities over 100,000 inhabitants, and Formigine records its own population as 34,496 at 1 January 2026. Emilia-Romagna in any case dispensed with the structural limitation by DGR n. 1505 of 2026, which this order names in its own subject line.

Euro 5 is caught here by the calendar and by the bulletin, not by a structural rule.

Penalty if you do not comply
€168.00 The order sets a range, not a fixed sum: under "art. 7 comma 13 bis del vigente Nuovo Codice della Strada" a breach of the circulation limits carries a "sanzione amministrativa pecuniaria da € 168,00 a € 678,00, salvo adeguamenti previsti ai sensi dell'articolo 195 del D. Lgs. 30/04/1992, n. 285" — those amounts are revised nationally for inflation every two years. A repeat offence within two years also carries suspension of the driving licence for fifteen to thirty days. ⚠️ THE CEILING DIFFERS BY ONE EURO FROM ITS SIBLING AND THIS RECORD DOES NOT RESOLVE WHICH IS RIGHT. Castenaso's order of 25 September 2026 cites the same article and prints "da € 168,00 a € 679,00"; Formigine's, three days later, prints "a € 678,00". Both are quoting a national tariff neither of them sets. This page quotes its own publisher, states the divergence, and does not silently pick a winner (D-261) — the practical consequence for a driver is nil, since the amount actually imposed is fixed by the national revision in force on the day, not by either ordinance. A second fine sits beside it, aimed at the paperwork the exemptions run on: using a photocopy of one of the documents the order relies on, or using one improperly — "veicolo condotto da persona estranea rispetto a quella indicata sul documento, circolazione al di fuori dei contenuti del documento" — is punished "da 38,00 a € 228,00". A driver exempt because of a disabled person's badge or a hotel booking should carry the original. The order's other measures carry their own separate penalties, which are not the circulation fine: breaches of the heating, biomass, open-burning and slurry points at 4.1 to 4.4, 8.2 and 8.3 run from €50 to €300 and the offender must stop at once, and any other breach of the order runs from €25 to €500 under article 7 of D.Lgs. 267/2000. Payment is due within sixty days of the notice. 🔑 The late-payment surcharge of 20% applies "Relativamente alla sanzione amministrativa pecuniaria di cui alle precedenti lettere b), c) e d)" — so it does not reach the circulation fine, which is letter a). ⚠️ Read that beside the Castenaso record, where the same clause points at "lettere c)-d)-e)-f)" and the list it points at has no letter f). Here the three letters named all exist and the clause is internally consistent, which makes the Castenaso version look like a local corruption of this template rather than a regional quirk. Either way, on both pages the fine a driver actually pays is outside the surcharge. Where a document is forged or altered the enforcing officer seizes it and opens a judicial-police file. Enforcement is by the road-police bodies of article 12 of the Highway Code and by officers and agents of the judicial police; ⚠️ unlike Castenaso and Maranello, this order names no volunteer ecological guards.Source: Comune di Formigine, read 2026-09-29

Comune di Formigine (MO) — Ordinanza n. 277 del 28/09/2026, the sanctions article letters a) to d), the sixty-day payment clause, the surcharge clause and the closing article naming the enforcing bodies

How to comply
  • Check the date and the day. The scheme is dormant from 1 April to 30 September and bites from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, Monday to Friday 08:30–18:30. Saturday carries no ordinary ban.
  • 🚨 Check the Sunday against the list, because this order names its Sundays and does not catch all of them. The nineteen ecological Sundays are 4, 11, 18 and 25 October 2026; 8, 15, 22 and 29 November; 10, 17, 24 and 31 January 2027; 7, 14, 21 and 28 February; and 7, 14 and 21 March. The other seven Sundays of the season carry no ban at all — 1 November 2026, every Sunday in December, 3 January 2027 and 28 March 2027. ⚠️ Do not carry a neighbouring town's calendar here: Castenaso names all four December Sundays and Maranello catches every Sunday of the same season without naming any.
  • Work out your Euro class. Banned Monday to Friday: petrol, LPG/petrol and methane/petrol up to Euro 2; diesel up to Euro 4; mopeds and motorcycles up to Euro 2. Banned on an ecological Sunday and during the emergency measures: the same five lines, except that diesel reaches Euro 5. There is no ticket, no permit and no payment that changes it.
  • 🔑 Work out where you are, and here the order tells you in words rather than leaving it to a sign. The ban covers the centro abitato of Formigine, and point 9 says the area is bounded by eleven roads that themselves stay open: Via Gatti; Via Giardini Sud from the Via Gatti / Via Quattro Passi roundabout to Via Achille Grandi; Via Achille Grandi as far as Piazza Roma; Via Sassuolo south to Via Costrignano; Via Ferrari to Via Radici; Via Radici to Via Pascoli; Via Pascoli to Via Monteverdi; Via Rivi; Via Giardini Nord towards Casinalbo; Via Sant'Onofrio from Via Lazio towards Casinalbo; and Via Sant'Antonio towards Colombaro. You may drive the ring. You may not cross into it.
  • The routes in and out of the park-and-ride car parks are excluded from the ban as well, so leaving an older car at one of them and walking in is the move this order is built around. ⚠️ Which routes those are is shown only on the annex, and the annex is not published — see the note under the area heading.
  • Watch the emergency bulletin if you are driving an older car in a cold spell, and watch it for the whole Province of Modena rather than for Formigine. Arpae publishes it on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; the measures start the day after and run to the next control day inclusive, at 08:00–19:00, on the Sunday list.
  • The fine is €168 to €678 under article 7 paragraph 13-bis of the Highway Code, with fifteen to thirty days' licence suspension for a repeat offence within two years. Pay within sixty days.
  • 🚨 Carry originals, not copies. Using a photocopy of one of the documents this order relies on, or using someone else's, is a separate offence carrying €38 to €228.
  • ⚠️ Move-In will not help you on a Sunday or during an alert. The order excludes enrolled vehicles from the weekday ban only, in as many words, and the Comune's own 2025 ordinance says the same thing twice. If you have read that Move-In covers the ecological Sundays and the emergency days, that is Maranello's rule, not this one.
  • Electric and hybrid vehicles are never caught, and neither are cars carrying at least three people where the vehicle is approved for four or more seats — two people where it is approved for two or three. Vehicles registered for specific transport or special uses are outside the ban as well, and this order publishes the list of those body types as its Allegato B.
  • A disabled person's parking badge issued under D.P.R. 151/2012 exempts the vehicle serving them, and so do journeys carrying someone to urgent or scheduled medical treatment, home-care patients and their carers, and blood donors on the day of donation. Emergency, rescue, breakdown-recovery, public-security and utility-maintenance vehicles are exempt, as are buses and school buses, doctors and vets on urgent home visits with their professional badge, vehicles carrying perishable goods or medicines, vehicles going to a booked roadworthiness test, market and fair traders, postal vehicles, vehicles on trade plates, and lorries over 3.5 tonnes limited to the run between their operator's base and the roads outside the ban.
  • Historic vehicles get less than you might expect: registration in ASI, Storico Lancia, Italiano Fiat, Italiano Alfa Romeo or Storico FMI exempts the vehicle only for organised events, not for ordinary driving.
  • Staying in the zone? A vehicle serving someone lodged at hotel-type accommodation inside the delimited area is exempt for the journey to and from the accommodation itself. Carry the booking, or send the Comando di Polizia Locale within the following ten days an attestation stamped by the property or a copy of its invoice showing your name and the vehicle's plate.
  • Strikes and eight named days lift the weekday ban outright — but check the day of the week before relying on one. The eight are 1 November 2026, 8, 25 and 26 December 2026, 1 and 6 January 2027, and 28 and 29 March 2027, plus any day of a local public transport strike. 🔑 Three of them are a Saturday or a Sunday, when the weekday ban does not run anyway. The five that do something are 8 and 25 December, 1 and 6 January, and Easter Monday, 29 March 2027.
