Driving in Rome: ZTL Fascia Verde

Rome, Italy · Low emission zone

In force in Rome right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 11:04 · Europe/Rome

Lifts Sunday, 18 October 2026 at 00:00 local time.

Rome's own words are that midweek public holidays are excluded (giorni festivi infrasettimanali). We have found no official, dated and reusable list of the public holidays currently in force in Italy, so we cannot apply that exclusion. On an Italian public holiday falling Monday to Saturday this page will say the Fascia Verde is in force when the city says it is not. The error only ever runs that way.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Rome's Fascia Verde is a large low emission zone around the city. Since 1 November 2025 the oldest vehicles may not enter, drive or even park inside it from Monday to Saturday, around the clock, except on midweek public holidays. It bans petrol, LPG and methane cars up to Euro 2 and diesel cars up to Euro 3 — residents' own cars included.

This is a separate scheme from the ZTL in the historic centre, which this record does not cover.

Daily charge

The Fascia Verde is a ban, not a charge: a vehicle either meets the standard or may not enter. Rome's permit system exists for residents and specific categories, not as a day pass a visitor can buy.

When it operates

Monday to Saturday, 24 hours a day, excluding midweek public holidays. In force since 1 November 2025 under Delibera 371/2022 and Ordinanza 145/2025.

Area covered

The Roma Servizi per la Mobilità page read on 2026-09-02 offers an address lookup on a map rather than a description of the Fascia Verde boundary in words. Not restated from general knowledge.

Why there is no map here
Roma Capitale publishes this zone's boundary on its own geoportal, but attaches no licence we can rely on, so we may not reuse the shape. We warn at city level and point you at the city's own map.

Petrol standard

Petrol, LPG and methane cars up to Euro 2 (Pre-Euro 1, Euro 1 and Euro 2) are banned. Mopeds, microcars and motorcycles running on petrol are banned at Pre-Euro 1 and Euro 1.

Diesel standard

Diesel, dual-fuel and mixed-fuel cars up to Euro 3 (Pre-Euro 1, Euro 1, Euro 2 and Euro 3) are banned. For diesel mopeds, microcars and motorcycles the Euro 2 ban announced in Delibera 371/2022 is deferred until 31 October 2026 by Ordinanza 145/2025.

Penalty if you do not comply

The Roma Servizi per la Mobilità page read on 2026-09-02 does not state the fine. Not estimated.

How to comply
  • Check your Euro class before you drive in: the ban covers parking inside the zone, not only driving through it.
  • Petrol, LPG or methane cars whose registration or logbook update predates 1 November 2024 are exempt, as are bi-fuel and converted ones on the same basis.
  • Other exemptions cover vehicles with a disabled person's badge, police, emergency and social-emergency vehicles, roadside recovery, scheduled public transport, municipal waste and civil-protection vehicles, and diplomatic plates (C.D., S.C.V., C.V.).
  • Vehicles of historic and collectors' interest under art. 60 of Dlgs 285/1992, and mopeds over thirty years old with a certificate of historic relevance, are also exempt.
  • On days when pollutant limits are exceeded, Rome announces temporary emergency measures — decided on Mondays and Thursdays, except public holidays — so the rules on a given day can be tighter than the standing ones.
