Driving in Castenaso

Italy: 1 scheme to know about before you drive in.

The short answer for Castenaso

Castenaso has one driving restriction on our books: the Limitazioni alla circolazione veicolare nei centri abitati di Castenaso… (low emission zone). What is a low emission zone?

What it means for your car

Petrol or LPG. Petrol cars of Euro 0, Euro 1 and Euro 2 are banned — "veicoli alimentati a benzina EURO 0, EURO 1 ed EURO 2, non conformi alla direttiva 98/69/A CE e successive o alla direttiva 99/96/A CE e successive" — so a petrol car needs to be Euro 3 or better. Bi-fuel vehicles running on LPG/petrol or methane/petrol are treated identically and banned up to and including Euro 2. Mopeds are banned up to and including Euro 2 where they do not comply with Directive 2013/60/EC or later, and motorcycles up to and including Euro 2 where they do not comply with Directive 2003/77/EC or later. None of these four lines moves anywhere in the scheme: they are caught at Euro 2 on weekdays, on the twenty-three ecological Sundays and while the emergency measures are running alike. It is only the diesel lines that move. ⚠️ One transcription note, because it is the publisher's and not ours: in the emergency list at point 8.1 the second line is printed "veicoli alimentati a GPL/benzina o metano/benzina 0, EURO 1 ed EURO 2", with the word EURO missing before the first 0. The same line is complete at points 1 and 3, so the class is not in doubt; the slip is quoted rather than repaired.
Diesel. Diesel cars are banned up to and including Euro 4 from Monday to Friday — "veicoli diesel EURO 0, EURO 1, EURO 2, EURO 3 ed EURO 4 non conformi alla direttiva 2005/55/CE B2 e successive o alla direttiva 99/96 fase III oppure Riga B2 o C e successive" — so a diesel needs to be Euro 5 or better on a weekday. Dual-fuel LPG/diesel and methane/diesel vehicles are banned up to and including Euro 4 on the same days. 🚨 On each of the twenty-three named ecological Sundays the car line moves one class further and Euro 5 is banned as well: point 3 lists "veicoli diesel EURO 0, EURO 1, EURO 2, EURO 3, EURO 4 ed EURO 5 non conformi al regolamento 715/2007*692/2008 (Euro 6 A o Euro 6 B)". So a Euro 5 diesel is legal here on a Tuesday and banned on 18 October, and only a Euro 6 diesel is clear of every list. 🔑 And the Sunday list is shorter as well as stricter, which is the trap in this record: the LPG/diesel and methane/diesel line that point 1 bans on weekdays is simply not among the five lines of point 3. Read as it is written, a methane/diesel Euro 4 is banned on a Thursday and not banned on an ecological Sunday. The emergency list at point 8.1 is the widest of the three and closes that gap from the other side, catching dual-fuel diesel up to Euro 4 and then dual-fuel diesel Euro 5 separately, "(a partire dal 1 Gennaio 2023)", alongside diesel cars up to Euro 5. ⚠️ A reader who has seen that Italian national law set a structural Euro 5 diesel limitation from 1 October 2026 should note that it does not reach Castenaso, and not for the reason they might assume: the national duty in Legge n. 105 of 18 July 2025 is aimed at municipalities over 100,000 inhabitants, and Emilia-Romagna in any case dispensed with the structural limitation by DGR n. 1505 of 07/09/2026, which this order cites in its preamble. Euro 5 is caught here by the calendar and by the bulletin, not by a structural rule.
