Driving in Pisa: Zona a Traffico Limitato dei Lungarni

Pisa, Italy · Limited traffic zone

Not in force in Pisa right nowTuesday, 13 October 2026 at 11:04 · Europe/Rome

Starts Friday, 16 October 2026 at 22:00 local time.

A window that opens at 22:00 runs into the small hours of the next day and is counted against the evening it starts on — a Sunday rule, even though most of it happens on Monday.

The ordinance names no exception for public holidays, and none is assumed here: it says Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so that is what this timetable says.

This is the riverside zone only. Pisa's two historic-centre sectors are closed to traffic 0–24 every day and have their own record here, and a driver on the Lungarni at 21:00 may still be one street away from a zone that never opens.

Operating times only, read from the source below. It does not check your vehicle.

What applies

Pisa closes its riverside to traffic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. From 22:00 to 05:00 the next morning, nine streets and squares along the Arno — Lungarno Pacinotti, Piazza Carrara, Via San Nicola, the stretch of Via Santa Maria between them, Lungarno Mediceo, Piazza Mazzini, Lungarno Galileo Galilei, Lungarno Gambacorti and the Ponte di Mezzo itself — become a limited traffic zone with a 30 km/h limit.

The measure was seasonal for years and was made permanent from 1 January 2025 because of the number of people on foot there at night. Bicycles, mopeds, light quadricycles and motorcycles are exempt, and a car already parked inside at 22:00 may stay where it is and drive out at any point before 05:00. A permit for either historic-centre sector, temporary or permanent, is automatically valid here as well.

Daily charge

There is no charge. The Lungarni zone is a ban for three nights a week with a list of exemptions, not a toll: the ordinance sells nothing, prices nothing, and creates no permit of its own — it makes the permits already issued for the two historic-centre sectors valid here too. Nothing to pay means nothing to estimate.

When it operates

Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, from 22:00 until 05:00 the following morning, since 1 January 2025. The same ordinance sets a 30 km/h speed limit in those streets on those days and in those hours. Outside the window the streets are ordinary roads.

A vehicle already parked inside the zone when it opens at 22:00 may leave its parking in place past that hour and may drive out to leave the zone before 05:00.

Area covered

Nine named streets and squares on both banks of the Arno in the middle of Pisa: Lungarno Pacinotti, Piazza Carrara, Via San Nicola, Via Santa Maria in the stretch between Via San Nicola and Lungarno Pacinotti, Lungarno Mediceo, Piazza Mazzini, Lungarno Galileo Galilei, Lungarno Gambacorti and the Ponte di Mezzo. The ordinance defines the zone as that list and nothing else, so the neighbouring quays and the other bridges are outside it.

Why there is no map here
The zone exists as a list of nine street names in the ordinance and nowhere else we could find: the city's dataset catalogue holds two datasets in total and neither is geographic, and the operator's portal publishes the ordinances and a parking map rather than geometry. A boundary drawn from nine names would be our line, not the city's. So the record warns at city level and the area field carries the list verbatim, which for a linear riverside zone is closer to how a driver meets it than a polygon would be.

Petrol standard

Not this scheme's business. The Lungarni zone restricts who may be on nine riverside streets on three nights a week; the ordinance sets no emissions condition of any kind, and its stated purpose is the number of people on foot there at night.

Diesel standard

Penalty if you do not comply

The ordinance does not state an amount. It charges the Municipal Police and the other road-police forces under article 12 of the Highway Code with enforcing it, and says the measure is made known by road signs put up under the Highway Code's rules, without giving a figure. Not estimated.

How to comply
  • Plan around it rather than through it: on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the riverside and the Ponte di Mezzo are shut to cars from 22:00 to 05:00, so a route that crosses the Arno in the middle of Pisa at night has to use another bridge.
  • If your car is already parked inside the zone at 22:00 you are not trapped and not caught: the parking may continue past 22:00, and you may drive out of the zone at any time before 05:00.
  • Bicycles, mopeds, light quadricycles and motorcycles may enter, drive and park in the spaces reserved for them, except in parking reserved for other classes of vehicle.
  • A permit for the historic-centre ZTL — either sector, permanent white list or temporary — is automatically valid in the Lungarni zone, on the same terms and with the same expiry date. Guests of a hotel inside the historic centre who have been put on the white list are therefore covered here too.
  • Residents of the Lungarni streets who held only a paid-parking (ZSC) permit and no ZTL permit were given access to this zone automatically when the ordinance was made; nobody in that position has to apply.
  • The 30 km/h limit applies in these streets during the same nights and hours.
